Many people were stopped and asked to show their papers. Some had passports and documents and others did not.

The former were let go while the latter comprised 13 men 7 women and 5 children, all Cambodians from various provinces.

All people who had sneaked into Thailand and worked illegally.

When work had dried up they decided to meet up and go home en masse.

Seems a bit pointless lifting them, if they were that close to the border and on the way out!

But then maybe the authorities wished to make sure that their employers had not cheated them in any way, and that they had been paid what they were owed...

I think that is a bigger story than the story. Just shows how even the lower paid cannot get work - let alone the thais that wont do it !

Maybe a large, government-funded infrastructure project just finished?

Investigate who employed them and jail them.

Sad, I would have let them cross the nearby border to get back home. IMO now a waste of Thai public money to investigate the circumstances!

Why stop them? Did they have baht on them?  The problem of being in Thailand would of been solved.
