Nearly half of Americans think Trump should suspend 2024 campaign after indictment: poll

As former President Donald Trump ramps up his 2024 presidential campaign, new polling reveals that while more than half of Americans believe he intentionally did something illegal after his indictment, many believe it was politically motivated.

Trump was arraigned Tuesday in New York City on charges stemming from alleged 2016 hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, making him the first former president in American history to be criminally charged.

A recent ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 48% of Americans think Trump should suspend his presidential campaign following the indictment, up 5 points from last week.

I would agree that people shouldn't necessarily change their mind if he's indicted but it's up to each individual. If he's convicted, that's another matter. I would have serious problems understanding why someone would want to vote for someone who's been convicted of a felony.

His popularity hasn't increased. It's decreased. Links have been provided to polls which show that. Even Senate republicans don't want him to run.

His popularity among Republicans may have increased but his popularity among the American electorate on the whole?

And of course, the poll you cite was taken right after the FBI search. What's more, later when Trump was pitted against Desantis in the wake of the November elections, his popularity was down. Not it's up again. So no good evidence that the Mar a Lago search lastingly benefited him.

Also, even if it had permanently boosted his popularity among Republicans, what effect did it have on his popularity among the general electorate? I know that Republicans are trying to game elections so that Republican votes are overrepresented in general elections,  but that's still far from being absolutely the case.

But what you didn't note in your text was that his support was raised among republicans but not among the general electorate. And since the poll featured here is a poll that samples all voters regardless of political orientation, your evidence is not relevant to the issue at hand.

Only if the poll shows over 50% support for not suspending his campaign. Typically, polls offer the option of 'don't know' or "no opinion".

I've never seen even a 3 year old kid who whines as much as trump. Biggest crybaby ever in the public eye. And his constant use of superlatives...everything about him is "Best", everything about others is "Worst". Even the people he chose for his Administration....as soon as they stop sniffing the vapors and admit he's somewhere between heavily flawed and batsh  --  it crazy, they're "slovenly and incompetent" or "deranged", or "dumb".

 

A few days ago he claimed people were crying in the courthouse in NY when he was arraigned. NOBODY else saw anyone crying. It's kind of like his lie that he saw "thousands of Moslems dancing and celebrating in New Jersey after the Twin Towers collapsed". Total lie. Mr Mendacity.

 

Let him run. He'll win the plurality if there are many R candidates, as his Cult are like the original Kool-Aid drinkers at Jim Jones' Jonestown. His candidacy GUARANTEES a Dem sweep in 2024....White House, Senate and House.

I agree that he shouldn't run again, but it has nothing to do with the indictments.  I would rather see a younger and more palatable person in the White House.

 

Really seems that fear is a big motivating factor amongst Democrats these days.  They realized that they dodged a bullet in 2020, thanks to Covid. Absent the pandemic, Trump would have been re-elected easily.

Trump's reaction to the pandemic killed his re-election, not the pandemic itself. A decent president with half a brain would have listened to the experts and acted accordingly. Trump claimed the epidemic would be over by Easter and that injecting bleach would get rid of it. Not to mention numerous other egregious lies and pseudoscience.

To be accurate, he didn't say bleach. He said disinfectant. So maybe he had Lysol in mind.

Not to flog a dead election, but he never said to inject bleach. Read the transcript.  He did move quickly to stop air travel from China at the beginning, which was loudly decried as racist by prominent Democrats like Nancy Pelosi.  I also remember a certain President declaring, "if you get vaccinated, you won't catch Covid"...
