Tuk-Tuk Drivers Paint Yellow Over White-Red Lines to Avoid Fines in Chiang Mai

Tuk-tuk drivers in Chiang Mai have been painting yellow on the edge of white-red footpaths to avoid paying traffic fines due to a lack of parking.

 

However, the municipality has called for an end to this illegal practice, and the drivers have agreed to pay a fine and return the footpaths to their original state, reported Thai Rath.

 

The issue was brought to the attention of the public when a young woman was seen painting yellow on the footpath behind Lan Khuang, Tha Phae Gate.

 

Municipal officials spoke with the tuk-tuk drivers responsible and found that the group had been considering painting the footpaths for a while, but only recently decided to do so.

The drivers' reasoning was that there were not enough parking spaces in the area, and they did not want to pay traffic fines while waiting for customers.

 

The group has since admitted their mistake and paid the fine, but has asked for sympathy from the government in allocating more parking spaces for tuk-tuks to facilitate tourism in the city.

 

The municipality has reminded the public that such actions are illegal, and that any form of text or image on walls, trees, or buildings adjacent to the road will result in a fine of 5,000 baht. The drivers have agreed to pay the fine and return the footpaths to their original state.

They should be fined for their stupidity as well on top of the other fine just for thinking that they can get away with it.

No, due to their complete disregard for laws and regulations of the road - or any other kind for that matter.

I've stopped using Tuk-Tuks right after my tourist days. Bunch of overcharging gangsters polluting the environment with their noisy, smelly two-stroke engines.

Did they think they never get caught,If it is painted red I know don,t park there.I always look  for unpainted areas if possible.1 Time I did the police saw me pointed to the red I moved.I will look out for the yellow one,s now too and that was outside burger king too as a  comment was said

A red and white curbside means no parking. A yellow and white curbside means no parking, but temporary loading/unloading of goods or passengers is allowed.

It’s a product of weak authority where citizens not only ignore existing rules, they take upon themselves to make the rules. What about mocy taxi riders breaking plastic cones to cross over or make u turns.

If red/white means no parking and yellow/white also means no parking but you are allowed a brief stop as opposed to red/white where you are not allowed to stop.. This means red/white is no stopping, unless in an emergency.

This is not a Thai rule but the same everywhere else where curb markings are used.
