What you seem unable to accept is Omicron is a non-severe viral infection, however, certain people are at risk. I would suggest a morbidly obese person with hypertension and diabetes would be at risk. I would also suggest that a healthy person in their 20's for example is not.

The world, including Thailand, is full of people of all ages with various health problems and medical conditions. So there's a huge risk pool out there, even leaving out the "entirely healthy" people with no issues.

I would say a minority. Maybe not in the US. Lots of obesity and comorbidities there. Anyhow globaly numbers are very low in comparision to when that nasty Delta was around and our friend Omicron came in and booted it off the face of the planet. Bit of evolutionary luck there.

Thailand is chock full of people with chronic medical conditions, and not just in the elderly... Diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure, obesity, etc etc....

Yes Thailand has a lot of people with a lot of medical problems. Diabetes is definitely on the rise (and has been for a long time) as is obesity. Thing I don't get is why this isn't reflected in hospitalisations and deaths from or with Omicron. Numbers are very low in comparison to Delta. This is undeniable so why? With so many people with comorbidities why are the numbers so low? To me there seems only one logical conclusion and this conclusion is supported by science. Omicron is not a severe viral infection. Countries are winding back or have wound back their vaccination programmes. Why? IMO they should have wound it back a long time ago. It wasn't long after Omicron took over from Delta that the writing was on the wall. We were moving towards endemicity. We are now pretty much there or in fact there already. What is the point of these daily articles?

Someone obviously needs to tell all the COVID hospitalizations, including those on ventilators and with pneumonia-like symptoms, that they really don't belong in the hospital because Dinsdale said so, that their cases and deaths aren't "severe."

Maybe a decent research about air pollution which cause lung infections and vulnerability to Covid infections would be better than just blame it on Songkran...How much Covid in air polluted areas, less air polluted or in in clean air.. and how about the effect of mask wearing.... how long do people use the same mask, which also can be a reason because after a few hours there are a lot of pollution in the masks too

258 people a day, on average, are being hospitalized in Thailand because of COVID, with the currently circulating variants being the most contagious since the outset of the pandemic...

 

And what several of you guys seem to want to obsessively complain about is OTHER people wearing face masks to try to protect their own health....

 

Before it was you didn't want the government to tell you to wear masks... And now that the government isn't doing that anymore, you now want to complain about what OTHER people choose to do that, frankly, is absolutely none of your business.

What concerns me with these spikes in numbers is the hospitals' ICU and CCU's capacity to handle patients, not just with serious COVID symptoms (that require intubation, oxygen and other labor intensive treatments to survive), but also the usual influx of serious and critical patients.  

During the large outbreak COVID periods, hospitals were forced to triage more than usual and forced to make difficult decisions to turn away seriously ill patients, who died, both with and without COVID related issues.  I recall the footage worldwide of freezer trucks filled up with bodies as morgue were at capacity. And traumatized hospital staff who had to turn away people they knew would die.

I hope the current 258 daily admissions (just for COVID patients) is nearing the maximum peak in infection rates.  Death rates are relatively low so far.  

Hoping there are still enough people who if unwell will do the decent thing and avoid coughing on people, wearing a mask and isolating.  Still quite a few self entitled deranged idiots out there who will refuse to care and spread it, and kill off vulnerable people.

Yes. It's comic. Wear your mask outside, where risk is essentially zero, but then doff it in a crowded a/c restaurant while you chinwag and chow down with your buddies, which is right up there in the risk stakes. Kind of like wearing a life jacket on the beach but then taking it off to go swimming because it's 'inconvenient'.

I can't speak for other people. Nor am I obsessive. I just think it's daft for people to wear face masks  outside. I also feel that masking young children is an abhorrent practice in any situation.

I think you make a good point about proportionality. It's almost as if the focus and reporting style on covid hasn’t changed much since it was a more serious, and little understood, new disease.

 

Were the dangers of covid to be reported in proportion to the dangers of everything else, we might not hear anything about it, unless a much more virulent strain were to appear. A bit like the flu, which only makes the news when a nasty one comes along, but kills old and sick people nevertheless.
