Popular Post Confuscious
I live in Thailand for more than 20 years now. In the first, let's say 10 years, the Thai people I've seen were mainly poor people, living under poor conditions. In Korat, where I was living, there were only 3 shopping Malls and not many Thai people were going there. There were almost no "fat" people and the available food was mainly local food. Now, the shopping Malls are almost every day filled with people. People are also walking around in Markets and other public places. But the main part of these people are really FAT and ugly. Wearing mini skirts and other clothes showing their fat hanging out. Their daily menu has changed from local food to KFC, Mc Donalds, etc. What is your opinion on this? (Please, keep this discussion civilised) 2 1 1
Popular Post Doctor Tom
What you haven't mentioned, is that in that time, the level of family and personal debt has rocketed, with many now living with a high debt burden as they try to catch up with more advanced countries in terms of the general standard of living. This has ended in tears for many families. https://tradingeconomics.com/thailand/households-debt-to-gdp Edited May 5, 2023 by Doctor Tom 5 1
Popular Post GameMaster
Charlie Munger was right: our problem used to be feeding poor people, now it's all about finding ways to prevent their obesity. At the end of the day, it's the same everywhere. Add to that our aging population problem and what you'll see on the horizon is an healthcare apocalypse. 2 2 1
Popular Post Felton Jarvis
It is their right to eat inferior food if they so desire. They should take a look at what that food has done to my home country. (USA). I don't know a single Thai woman who thinks it's a benefit to be fat. 2 1
Popular Post Furioso
This is a simple formula being implemented by corporations all over the world. 1. Get the populations addicted to your deadly poison. 2. The population becomes obese, weak, easier to manipulate. 3. Rake in the profits. 4. The rich become richer. 5. The poor become not only poorer, but also SLAVES to their corporate masters. 1 1 3 1 1
Popular Post Gaccha
The problem is that touching a mobile phone screen does not require many calories. Combine that with the reality that empty calories are often very tasty and very cheap and very addictive. Thailand is facing this problem like everybody else. In the UK now, 23% of 11-year-olds are obese (not fat, but obese); it was 13%, 20 years ago. That figure of 13% was regarded as alarming at that time. Our only real hope is that their fat fingers will no longer be able to scroll their mobile phones, and instead they will be forced to do marathon runs as an alternative hobby. Some say this is a wildly optimistic hope of mine. 2

You're right, these dangerous %'s have doubled/tripled/quadrupled over the last few decades. Governments should have protected their citizens, but they didn't. Citizens should have risen up and crushed the evil doers, but they didn't. And the sad fact that you point out; We do this to our children. A crime against humanity. marin
Bigger factor than eating <deleted> food is the total lack of exercise. Especially the younger ones and adolescents. Little to no exercise at all. Walk outside and get a motorbike to where you are going or a main road. Then taxi for the more affluent and a bus for those not. Another motorcycle to school or work. Texting and playing games on your phone are not forms of exercise. 1

I know several young people who burns more calories in 1 day as the average person on 1 month. Yet, they are really obese. This is only because of their feeding habits which consists of lots of sugary food (bread and cake shops, sugary drinks such as bubba tea, etc.). Food and drinks which were hardly available to the common Thai citizens a decade ago.

OneMoreFarang
I think many parents are to blame. When I was young, including a teenager, I was drinking mostly tea or milk at home. And proper cooked "traditional" food. The kind of food which people consumed since forever. Now it seems many parents give their kids coke and similar drinks whenever they want. And KFC and all that. Nobody should be surprised if there are negative consequence. It's still possible to live healthy and eat yummy food. It's up to us if we do that.
Popular Post Adumbration
What percentage of Thai people exercise regularly and properly....and I don't count walking around in front of your house flapping your arms as proper exercise. Soft drink is what does it for the kids. Once they are fat....no going back because zero exercise. I have already posted on another thread. I found an old password for Thaifriendly the other day. I have been logging in to my account. I used it about 15 years ago when I was dating. I was frankly horrified at how fat the girls are now. Even the ones who state upfront that they are freelancers. 2

bignok
Obesity isn't a problem unless you are unhappy. Some fat people are happy. Some skinny people are miserable. 3 1

Popular Post pgrahmm
The Thai people like to graze.....Organized, sit down meals which might have nutritional values built into the meals - not so much..... Years ago they'd "graze" on fruits, etc. - it was their sweet treats + healthy.... Now they graze at 7/11's when the hunger strikes.....If you see a school there's a 7/11 nearby to take their money, while conditioning each new generation.... It's not going to get any better..... spongeworthy
Thailand's natural beauty is currently being crushed under the weight of PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Nestle... the usual suspects. If they expect to still have a tourist industry in 20 years, they need to start locking up all of the 50kg+ land whales until they get back down to an acceptable BMI. BRB, Grab just arrived with my KFC family bucket. 2

I doubt this "special" tourist industry will exist here in 20 years. More likely Thai "tourists" will visit one of Europe's then third world countries.
