Stranded in Thailand: Bankrupt foreign woman unable to return home

The $10k story is so she can ask to borrow like $1k and promise to pay back at a very high interest rate. 
 

Sounds like the local Thais bought her story. Hopefully they didn’t advance her any money. 
 

Reminds me of a certain large-legged person who received lots of donations and ended up partying it away on Patpong with no shame whatsoever.

I can see that withdrawing money can be challenging if you have lost your card(s).  My US Bank (Citi) would not send replacement cards to Thailand. However, if the sister is able to send 10K, then surely she can book a ticket for her and send some good old-fashioned Western Union money for incidentals to get to the airport.

Incorrect, the deportee pays for the police escort to the airport AND the flight. That is why there are so many longstayers in IDC, they can not afford the flight or escort.

Probably her passport is expired. Many foreigners are overstaying in Thailand for 10-15 years keeping low profile and never being caught. Some of them are criminals and fugitives not willing to return to their home country for various reasons.

One wonders why she can't go to the US Embassy and ask for help, from what I understand the US Embassy does have a program where they will lend American citizens the money to get home and they have to pay it back, so what's going on here?

 

I think there's a lot more than meets the eye, the story does not sound 100%, yes tourists do go broke while they're overseas, but there are too many loose ends here. 

I think you are absolutely accurate on what is published in the name of journalism today because it's not. It's just media. Very little if any investigation and no follow up. Just copy and paste and regurgitate without fact checking or verification. 

 

Yes, the US has a loan program tied to passports and she could easily easily get back to the US. 

 

If the sisters transfer isn't accessable (doubtful) the sister could just reverse it and buy a plane ticket

Not sure why you'd describe yourself as a ''lowly teacher'' . All the teachers I meet have well paid jobs and enough spare cash to party on holidays, until its time to head back to their home country. . back to on topic: the root problem, as always, is it is often impossible to comment intelligently, due to lazy reporting of the facts,  in the most of the Thai media. then again, ignorance is bliss ????

The US Embassy does not give advice to Americans who are out of money.  They only offer a loan to get back to the US.  They will not offer sympathy or empathy.  Can you imagine how of these stories the US Embassy has heard over the years?  Also, she probably does not have internet access.

I am not a US citizen; however, I was under the impression from previous threads the US loans the cost of the airfare ( coach, obviously ) to get stranded travellers back home.
