Thailand voted for freedom and democracy, with big majority. If the ruling junta will not accept the elections, that will mean big problems, until civil war. The patience of Thai normal people has come to an end after 10 years of dictatorship, with financial misery for many Thai people. The ruling elite of monarchists and military proofed nearly 10 years, that the are not able to run the country. Its really time to remove them from power.

Unfortunately they are right. Judging by the rather uneducated comments on here the US can't help themselves. They are serving their own vested interests. They have overthrown more than 50 government's since 1945 many of them democratically elected. You can offer all the proof in the world, like the American funded YSEALI academic fellowship that grooms political leaders in South East Asia. My only concern is the military government knew this so why just not bar anyone who has been on the fellowship from Thai politics. Why wait until after the election and why for the last ten years were they not a better government for the Thai people. I feel a coup coming on. They seem to love them in this country.

A good Thai friend of mine, a pharmacist on whom I had relied on good advice for a healthy life and for whom we had done favors for each other for seventeen years - and never, ever discussing politics, began attacking me on LINE for no other reason than I was a US citizen. I finally had to block him avoid his senseless attacks and diatribes.

 

It is not as though the US is without sin in enforcing its will in certain political events around the world - but these guys have lost the script. US intervention comes after the fact, not before. If you know US history in the Middle East, Central and South America, you would know this to be true.

 

So to the the Thai people, and my 'former' friend, who are absorbed in this political fiction, know your history before making such brazen assertions. Know your own people who are tired of the continuous yoke of military dictatorships, countless coups, Constitutions that are the whim of the power elite, and know these are the events that predicated the results in this election.

 

Whether my friend would blame me for interfering in Thai politics, I will say that I am elated with the results of this election and hope that the Thai people will finally be able to embrace democracy with all its attendant processes that allow the people to have a voice in their own future.

US intervention?  I think actual examples of US meddling is more like Afghanistan and Iraq.

If there are any people pulling strings, I'd suggest the Thais look towards that big country to the north.

Like the USA, and the rest of the world for that matter, doesn’t already have enough on its plate. I suspect that the true protesters would welcome most legitimate support cum intervention, especially any proffered by the West, as it tends to be backed by something tangible and with teeth. This was one of the more misleading headlines of late. In this day and age a handful of “inconvenienced” royalists doth not a protest make.

Perhaps I operate using a different logic, but I can't quite see this Ambassador's comment as proof that the agency was involved in influencing the election.

 

Thailand is a lovely country, but it just doesn't happen to be a geopolitical priority of the US. That's why it has a career diplomat as Ambassador, and not a FOP (Friend of POTUS). Other than cooperating on things like international terrorism, the foreign policy arm of the USG simply wishes Thailand and its people well.

 

I appreciate that those protesters likely consider Thailand the center of the known Universe, but others don't quite see it that way.

The current anti-American rhetoric is being driven by two factors:

 

Pita Limjaroenrat attended KSG/Harvard and Sloane/MIT.

 

MVF advocates for reforms of the Institution.

 

 

Ergo, Royalists, who garnered what, a paltry 150,000 votes via the Thai Pakdee party, view Pita as a U.S. backed lackey intent on toppling the Institution.

 

The U.S. has been a strong supporter of the Monarchy over ~ 75 years.

Thailand has always voted for freedom and democracy. Doesn't mean they get it.
