BHUMJAITHAI LEADER ANUTIN Charnvirakul Monday (June 26) categorically ruled out the possibility of a minority government with dozens of MPs to be bought out at a later date from the current coalition partners.

Anutin reconfirmed that the Bhumjaithai as the third largest elected party with 71 MPs will definitely not try to conduct such unbecoming ploys to form a minority government and steal power from the coalition partners led by the Move Forward with 151 MPs and the Pheu Thai with 141 MPs.

Only “a buffalo” would ever offer to hand out as much as 100 million baht in kickback to each of an estimated 60 coalition MPs in bid to turn a minority government into a majority one at a later date, according to the Bhumjaithai leader who said there will be no more “cobras” at parliament as had been the case in several past years.

In Thai jargon, “buffalo” refers to a very stupid person whilst “cobra” means an unreliable, bribe-taking MP who could possibly sway votes or switch parties in exchange for a huge payoff.

He seems to know the excact  figure it would take to buy a vote.

I think no....I think the price varies. If there are just 1-2 votes missing and no one want to do it, they'll ask for the double.

Price depends on the demand.

On the other hand if only 2 votes are missing and many people are ready they would pay only a fraction.

When they start using these anthropomorphic parables you know they want to give you quick look behind the curtain.

In this case, Anutin is the Clever Monkey, just trying to get across the river.

How much is a Senator?

I'd expect at most a tenth the cost of an elected MP. Senators are unelected and clear majority pro-military agenda supporters. No single Senator can really make any difference currently in the formation of a new government. So a kind of "group discount" might apply.

and they don't need to worry about re-election...what the voter thinks.

60 something Senators are needed. I think BJ would also have something like 60 MPs. Don't know what that means for the negotiations.
They only need to pass the vote one time......I don't know how a non confidences vote is regulated in the Thai constitution.

It's been pointed out that the Democrats will elect their new leader on July 9th. If Abhisit is elected, he and the party will vote for Pita as PM. Another 25 votes in the bag

IMO Dem should overhauled their party and not clinged to past controversial leaders like Abhisit. The stigma from his association with non democratic means to obtain power will be unforgivened by the progressives. The party has suffered dramatic decline in support especially in Bangkok which has been their tradition stronghold. A better choice will be Mdm Watanya Bunnag who is much younger and very popular with the youths and untarnished with political baggages should be in a better position to turn the party;s fortune. Mdm Dear as she popularly known in the football fraternity and a favourite among the party members in the South. She will support Pita too.
