Lopburi worth a look?

Featured Replies

Taking the Mrs to Ayuthaya and Sukhothai. Should we bother with Lopburi?

I would give the city a pass, but that's us.  Countryside can be nice, big lake, some hills.  Khmer ruins, wats, if into those, If haven't peeked;

Do you like monkeys? Beware of your belongings!

The province, maybe. The town, no. The famous temple is disgusting full of monkey <deleted> and stench.

Ok

If you pushed on through Lopburi on route 21, you get to Phetchabun, which is quite nice. You've got Khao Kaw, the Switzerland of Thailand, and at the southern end is Amphur Wichian Buri, the home of the famous Grilled Chicken (gai yaang) Wichian.

Then you  can take the scenic Route 12 over to Pitsanulok and Sukhothai.

I went to Lop Buri on a day trip from Ayutthaya on my third day ever in Thailand in 2003. Easy to reach by train for a pittance.

Interesting and historically important palace, very 'Thai'. And of course the monkeys.

Thought it was a gas.

Why not if you're in Ayuthaya?

It has nothing to offer and has a hell of a lot of monkeys, save your time and money and go elsewhere.
