we all know that thais only give us the time of day if we are paying.

They couldnt care less about us if we arent.

No money, no honey i believe is the popular phrase.

How does this make you feel at a deep level?

are you comfortable with it?

Do thais also treat each other the same way?

do friendships here revolve solely on materialism?

I know in the west friends are mostly made in our youth, when we all had nothing and came up together.

Here it seems it doesnt work that way.

You never see hi so mixing with lo so etc

seems everything is based on how much money you have in the bank.

Which is strange because there are way more poor people in Thailand than there are rich.

I guess maybe you gotta get out to the villages to meet the genuine Thais, right?

I stopped paying for thai people a long time ago.

Because whenever I did I never got any extra respect or whatever.

it was just like it was expected cos i was a foreigner.

Now I mostly get the Thais to foot the bill and use the old adage 'well im a guest here so...'

and do you know what, it works surprisingly well! ????

Just what bill are you talking about, can you give an example? Besides you are not a guest here, Guests are people who are invited and are respected.

Let's wait and see if this new government really will treat us expats as guests.

if my subjective truth through personal experience is negative then so be it! I can't help that, can I?

It is not "your truth", it is "your opinion" but your opinion of the Thais with which you associate is not the truth about Thais in general.   You can help that.

no ...  but yes, they want the farang to pay for everything because he has alot more money,  and they will connive and conspire to lie and cheat so they get as much as possible from you.

bob,  i'm comfortable with a drink in my hand.

Apart from when they are driving or riding motorbikes, I find the vast majority of Thai's very respectful and honest.

maybe from here? we are constantly told we are guests in this country. dont guests usually have hosts?

No one has told you that you are a guest here other than as a figure of speech, if they have, be specific.  To be a guest here you would have to have been invited...you weren't.

HISO Thais are horrible people and would have you killed if they could.

Hi/So, are a small part of real Thailand. I have lived in the same nice upscale muban for 20+ years. My neighbors are all nice people who raised kids there as we did. Now a lot of retired people who exercise, chat and often eat together. They really have nothing to do with the scenario Bob described. You can get on with life here, or you can stay on the outside looking in. IMHO

Some people seem to live in La-La land and do not realise they are being cheated on a daily basis. Go to any service, shop etc that does not clearly display prices with a thai friend/bargirl/whatever,  asking to quote the price. Then go back as a farang and ask for the price for the same. Make your conclusions after.

Yes, he might be mixing with the wrong kind of people. But it reminds me of an experience I read about, when a foreigner took his new girlfriend for a meal and several of her friends showed up as well for what they thought would be a free feed. They duly ordered everything on the menu, and he left the table saying he was going to the toilet and instead left the restaurant and the girls to pay for it all themselves. Hero.

And the next morning his scooter was totaly ransacked and destroyed ?
