A handful of defendants have been sentenced to more than a decade of incarceration over their actions during the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021. 

The Justice Department (DOJ) announced earlier this month that approximately 597 federal defendants have had their cases adjudicated and received sentences for their activity Jan. 6. About 366 individuals have been sentenced to periods of incarceration.

Many of those with the longest sentences include members of the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers — two far-right extremist groups whose members took to the Capitol to attempt to stop the votes of the 2020 election from being counted.

Two members of the Proud Boys — Joe Biggs and Zachary Rehl — were sentenced Thursday for actions they took on Jan. 6. Two more Proud Boys, Dominic Pezzola and Ethan Nordean, are scheduled to be sentenced Friday while Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio will be sentenced next week.

Here are five of the longest Jan. 6 sentencings so far:

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in prison in May, after being found guilty on conspiracy charges for his role in the Capitol attack.

Rhodes currently has the longest sentence of any Jan. 6 defendant. Judge Amit Mehta laid down the sentence at the time, telling the leader that he is “not a political prisoner” and that he is an “ongoing threat and a peril to this country.”

Rhodes’s sentence was also notable because he did not actually enter the Capitol on Jan. 6, but instead he directed his team via a walkie-talkie app as they entered the building in a “stack” formation.

The sentence was shorter than the DOJ’s ask for 25 years of imprisonment.

Interesting, I just watched a BBC news segment where the attorney for Rehl who got a sentence of 15 years did an interview outside the court. He blamed his clients actions and sentence on Trump. 

 

Rehl's attorney Norm Pattis says he client took cues from the "highest elected official in the land," i.e. Trump, who told them the election was stolen:

"I wonder why that man hasn't been charged with seditious conspiracy and why he isn't answering to that charge."

I would have no problem with these sentences had the summer of love anti Trump rioters (and their backers and people paying their bail)that burned courthouses, threatened Supreme court judges, and engaged in violent and fiery looting and mayhem making faced similar "justice".

The anti democracy rioters were using violence to attempt to achieve political goals ie overthrowing the democratically elected orange fella. There is a world for that.

 

But no. Lets obsess over some dude that smashed a window after being egged on by undercover agents and other ne'er do wells. Sad to see more indefensible double standards in bidens DOJ.

First off, there's the nonsense that other people who committed violence weren't prosecuted. But the fact is that none the people who attacked the Capitol on January 6 were directly attacking the constitutionally authorized transfer of power. Sore and violent losers. These ignorant, misguided, delusional grunts got lucky and got less than they deserved. Suspect #1 is facing 91 felony charges over a broad spectrum with a maximum potential of 700 years. He'll surely be convicted on some of those, but even if he only gets 1%...that's 7 years. Likely a life sentence for the lying, cheating, imbecile insurrectionist a-hole❗

Somewhat desperate denials of reality.  The radio was used to coordinate an attack on the Capitol to prevent the Constitutional certification of a legitimate election.  People who break the law in protests are generally prosecuted when the evidence is strong enough, the fact that the Jan 6 insurrectionists posted evidence of their crimes on the internet made the evidence especially easy to collect.  Many of the judges ruling against the attempts to overturn the election were appointed by Republicans, etc.
