Bangkok’s stormy wake-up call: Governor urges preparedness as capital weathers surprises

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt urged the city to be on high alert after storms hit the capital this week resulting in a number of unexpected incidents such as tree collapses, power outages, and flooding. This includes mobilising vehicles from various districts to facilitate the transportation of citizens in risk-prone areas. The command centre reported heavy rainfall yesterday in the Bang Na area.

The Bang Na area has Bang O and Bang Na canals for water drainage, which are operated by a major pump station capable of pumping 20 cubic metres of water per second. However, a fallen tree damaged a transformer at the pump station, causing a power outage and preventing the drainage of water.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) was promptly notified to expedite repair works, and power was restored around 9pm. The main issue was the unforeseen power outage, which has now been resolved. Future focus will be on the maintenance of trees near transformers and the installation of additional diesel pumps.

Another problem encountered was the difficulty faced by citizens commuting home due to the flooding. The long waiting time for motorcycle taxis led to a large number of people waiting for transportation. As a result, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had to mobilise vehicles from different districts to facilitate smoother transit.

Didn't see that coming.

How can Bangkok flood ?

After a certain prisoners daughter claimed there would be NO MORE floods in the city.

Was this a politician telling lies ?   ????

Beloved uncle Tu had enough time to do it right.

Still dreaming about no flood in a country where daily rainfall can exceed a months rainfall in European countries in a flat low lying concrete sealed city.

It's just a question of how long it takes to pump it to the sea.

Bad flooding in some UK cities yesterday, can happen anywhere if the rain is torrential, in Bangkok and Pattaya, at least it clears really quickly

The BKK governor should check into the hospital to have his declining memory checked.

Every year this time there are storms which bring "tree collapses, power outages, and flooding."  They are nothing new under the sun (or rain-pregnant clouds).  But the new narrative to to attempt to make the average yokels fear - everything.  Weather included.

"Unexpected!"  Only if you are living in an ivory tower in some celestial paradise.  Just more daft tosh.

Her government was overthrown by the military, so she didn't exactly get the chance to follow through on this over the last 8 years did she.

She took the money and ran, a family trait

Sister, daughter, it doesn't matter.  Why would you hold her responsible when she hasn't been around in 9 years?

SDS.  The first "S" stands for Shinawatra.

I remember Chamlong Srimuang was the governor who prevented thigh high floods by having workers clean up the drainage system in advance. His "green ants" as he called them were remarkably successful.

Why can't governor's follow his example instead of being surprised every year?

Answer: Longer & longer as the sea rises.

Yingluck was never quoted as saying "There will be no more floods in Bangkok".

Exactly.   And she never made the alleged "NO MORE floods in Bangkok" claim that some poster has fabricated.
