What type of Doctor/surgeon/specialist

Featured Replies

Hi, I broke a finger some 40+ years ago, and never treated, it has steadily got worse, bending now ,causing skin peeling on adjacent fingers, where it rubs and the nail damages the skin too, I don't think it could be broken and reset now, and was thinking of getting the first section amputated, it pushes all the fingers together and can become really itchy and can become intense ( I have some allergy cream that stops it).  I want to use a Govt. hospital who would probably call him a hand doctor, but what is the correct terminology for such a doctor/specialist?

It can be bent straight easily sometimes a crack can be heard.

Yes, there are specialized hand doctors in Thailand. They could be orthopedic surgeons with expertise in hand-related conditions or plastic surgeons focusing on hand issues. If you visit a large government hospital and explain that you’re seeking a hand specialist while showing them your hand, they will likely guide you to the right doctor.

Keep in mind that in these hospitals, you might initially see a general practitioner before getting referred to a specialist. While it’s possible to have this process completed in a single day, it’s best not to set overly high expectations.

Normally That is the problem, see a gen. doc. one day, who will give some type of meds. And given an appointment to go back on what ever day the specialist works there, IME normally from a private hospital, who will then tell you to come back whatever day he operates, (or tell you' oh you need to come to My hospital it needs special tools BS) as my hospital is at least a 2hr (and ferry) trek I'd rather cut out the first general GP, knowing what type of specialist is req. then with a phone call i can find out. Thanks.

Again --  WHERE in Thailand are you?

Going to other than a university affiliated government hospital will be waste of time.

You can directly access the appropriate specialist through after hours clinic in a government hospital. Treatment would not be same day of course but could at least have consultation and set treatment plan.

But as you mention ferry ride I am not sure there is an such hospital in your area. You would probably do  better to travel rather than waste time locally.

Hospitals likely to have what you need are:

Siriraj (excellent microsurgery unit) in Thonburi/Bangkok

Prince of Songkhla Univ Hosp in Hat Yai

Srindakarind Hospi in Khon Kaen

Maharaj Nakorn in CM

And of course other major univ hospitals in Bangkok but if going to travel that far should go to Siriraj.

I can suggest specific doctors if/when you are willing to start your location or preferred place of treatment from the above list

Trat Hospital has a very up to date new building , with new technology and good  staff, The Specialists are from BKK private hospital and only work certain days of the week there.

Rather aggressive response, no need to SHOUT. So YOU don't know what type of surgeon which was my question.

Chill, Mr. She did answer you.

Having even a rough idea of your location greatly narrows it down and will lead to more specific and valuable advice.

On the contrary, I told you  what type of surgeon and where to find in the very second post in this thread.  And  asked where you in Thailand you were, which you did not answer. Sorry if I got frustrated but it is difficult to assist people who do not answer essential question.

None of that means they will have a hand/microsurgery specialist.

As I said previously you should go to a University hospital for this.

Trat Hospital is a provincial level facility (2nd tier in the Thai hospital system) . Highly, highly unlikely to have a microsurgery/hand specialist. It will have an ortho doctor, but not a hand specialist. Waste of time IMO (and worse than that if you let an ordinary ortho not specialized in hand to operate on you) but suit yourself.

I doubt that Trat Hospital will have a hand specialist. You can visit the orthopedic department, which is only open in the morning before noon, except on Wednesdays when the orthopedic doctor will be on service in the afternoon.

I would suggest you go to the nearest university hospital, which is Burapha University Hospital. You’ll have a better chance of getting to see a hand specialist.

Thanks for trying Sheryl - some people are just 'to diificult' for their own good.

Thanks for that list of 'top' hospitals in Thailand - much appreciated.

As a related question - have you any feedback or information about the Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital in Sattahip ?

That used to be a small hospital, much smaller than places like Chula or Siriraj, or KKU hospital.

Have they expanded?

For what sort of problem?

No specific problem - we live nearby and it looks big (1000 beds) and that it would do most procedures.

It is apparently (Wiki) linked with both Burapha University and the Phramongkutklao College of Medicine.

Just looking for any feedback regarding the Hospital.

It is fine (if you don't mind the waits/red tape normal for any government facility).

It is only 200-300 beds, not 1000, and range of specialties is somewhat limited. The main specialties are of course represented (ortho etc) but there are things they cannot do.

Thanks Sheryl - much appreciated.  Clearly Wiki has got it wrong.

My middle finger was bitten off by my dog at the first joint. It was a long time ago.

I was flown to Bangkok and it was re-attached at Bangkok Hospital, Bangkok by a doctor who specialised in re-attaching penis's. Nice Japanese microsurgeon. Mine was his first finger re-attachment. He filmed the op and follow up.

I would lend my dog to you to bite your finger off but he died some 20 years ago.
