underweight products in stores

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Recently, after purchasing some products at one of Thailand's large stores, I had the feeling that something wasn't quite right with the weight, so I weighed the products.

Brand products were ok, always at or above the weight on the label, but several products sold under their own in-house brand were under weight by 5 to 8%.

I contacted their aftersales department and got a dismissive reply, saying at the time that I weighed it wrong, that I should have kept the product to show it, that it's not their problem because the producer is responsible, bla bla...

Considering that store's price advantage vs other retailers is usually in the range of 0-5%, these antics completely nullify their supposed competitive advantage.

Are your scales certified/calibrated?

If so, and you videoed (no edits) the complete weighing process and kept all the product then, maybe, just maybe you have a case.

I'm assuming here we're not talking about gold or other high-value products, is it really worth the hassle?? Just don't buy the same product again.

Back home you could contact the weights and measures people (or one of the TV channels) with your concerns and they may do their own investigation but TiT.

All I can say is: 'hasn't the O/P got better things to do with his time than weigh his shopping?'

Even wasting time on this forum beats that!

I guess you rather talk about cabbage soup.

Perhaps they reduced the package weight (like everyone else), and just couldn't be bothered to update the new weight on the label. (Often when I buy groceries, I pay more at the check-out than what the shelf labels indicate.)

lol, the scale worked ok for all brand products.

only for roughly 50% of in-house brand products it didn't, and strangely enough, it always came up short for these products.

I also checked with items of known weight that is reliable.

"worth the hassle" ?

what's the difference between cheating on 8% of a ton of sausage and 8% of a Kg of gold ?

I see there are enough mugs who don't care what they pay ...

Many business owners buy their wares "en gros" there, my post was meant for them, I know they care about paying a 5 to 8% hidden tax on their purchases.

true, TiT, my interest wasn't naming and shaming (although I would have done it in Europe after being dismissed in such a manner by the aftersales dpt.)
I can only hope their clients will weigh their purchases and complain if they got cheated.

Oh so you would be OK going to the gas station paying for a litre and getting 800ml.

Cool man.

Anyone actually surprised though ?

To be honest, I wouldn't have a clue. Neither do I look at the scales when we go shop in the local market. Nor do I count my small change. (another mundane topic that turned up recently)

There are better things in life to be enjoying in whatever time I have left on this planet, than to be mithered by such trifling details.

Happens in a lot of village shops every day. You'll be lucky to get 800ml into a 750ml whiskey bottle.

Trifling to one is important to another. Good for me I have plenty of time left to trifle about it.

Make sure you don't run out of gas.

If I recall correctly, the O/P of that 'scintillating'  topic is on my 'ignore user list so I never got round to reading it.

They were quite right; what were you expecting them to do for you if you didn't keep the product as evidence?

You'll have to explain that profundity.   Were you buying sausage, or gold?!

What were the several different products that were underweight?

I do agree with the OP, but I can't comment on Thailand because I moved back to the west. When I buy meat, it always includes a silicon pack, if you take that out and all the water included it is never the weight as it says on the label of the pack.

And let's just say that you, you the nOOdle were actually, intelectually agile enough to know this, were you still stupid enough to pay full price?

the ideal customer, they can short change and overcharge you easy, well done

I've only weighed fruit and veg from the market before, no problem, except there was one at Buakhao market that clearly had a dodgy scales

Customer service here can be poor, at big C i bought a cut loaf which had only been cut into about 6 slices, customer service was combative and tried to blame me, laughable really

Did you weight more than1 sample of each product?  It’s been a since I worked with consumer products here in Thailand but I believe the regulation is that a batch of product must average label claim.  This means that some will be above and some below the stated label weight.

I assume you are a wealthy person who does not object to paying an extra 5 - 8% on purchases ?

Is that some kind of joke? No I am not a wealthy person at all, I just have better things to do with my time than worrying about odd few baht that I may be losing out on.
