Th basic philosophy of many people of influence in Thailand is that animals are not sentient but mere commodities and they simply can't understand what all the fuss is about.

kind of messes up the whole reincarnation thing then eh.

Some people have no scruples and will do anything for money. Hope the animals can recover and lead a happier life.

It is the Chinese desire for tiger parts which fund such activities.

For years now weve talked about change in Thailand. Even the Thais will tell you that the only hope for change will come from the youth, its just taking a little to long?

Interesting point. And now please tell me: What exactly should be changed? Then WHO should change it?

Why don't you quote exactly the whole of what I said instead of this out of context snippet. You must work for CNN

Why are keeping tigers in cages worse than keeping chicken in cages?

It's not!

It's just that this has gone unexposed for far too long.

Parts of the world are moving away from battery chickens - I don't know about Thailand.  Here in UK one can buy free-range eggs, for example.

The only SMALL saving grace is that the chickens are at least there for food - does NOT mean it's OK though.  The tigers were there for so-called "entertainment". 🤬

this really sucks. i imagine this will cause a shortage in tigers available to be drugged up for selfies.

And tigers parts used for Chinese medicine,...!?!?

Tiger parts have been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. Tiger bones treat ulcers, typhoid, malaria, dysentery, burns and even rheumatism. Other parts, like its whiskers, are worn as talismans or protective charms or used to sooth toothaches. Its penis is sold as a sexual tonic, and its skin is valued as a trophy or worn in clothing as a symbol of wealth.

Humans have got to be the most disgusting species.

How many years has this 'undisclosed facility' been operation out in the open, with full knowledge of officials?

The brown envelopes must have dried up.

Your karma dictates what you are reincarnated as, and the suffering endured in that like decides on the next - so mistreatment of animals is just karma. It is the view that medicimnes etc are not really a good idea as they mask your true state.

I first vitied Thailand in 1994 and i ived and worked here for 20 years and I can assure you some changes are massive - it's hindered by the fact that the country is run by an ultra-conservative and relatively uneducated elite.

Thanks.

I suspect that the NGO was encouraged to 'go in' to avoid an official government raid which would have required some awkward explanations.

It's a government department authorising the removal - all tigers are technically owned by the government. In this case the authorities have "appointed" WFFT to handle the situation because previous exercises like this were such a mess.

The only reason the authorities acted was because of local peer pressure and NGO pressure as well as the envelopes stopped coming ......   hence the local Government official had to do something.

TIT ....  they don't care about anything but their own pockets.

About half of the tigers were brought to a wildlife place in Ratchaburi.  As you say most died there from some disease.  When the tigers were first sent there they put a big billboard out on the road asking for donations to take care of the tigers.  After about a year the billboard was removed.

All but 12 of these 148 tigers are now dead

"Rescued." Trading one cage for another.

Or, you could read the article...

"a new life at WFFT’s Tiger Rescue Centre. Sadly, they will never be able to return to the wild, but we can offer them the next best thing: a safe, sanctuary home where they can roam forested land, socialise with other tigers, and even swim in the lake".

This story does seem a bit strange, these animals are worth a lot of money

as parts.

So why treat them so badly. that's not a very good business model.

could have just fed them on Soi dogs.

Two birds with one stone, type of thing.

Amazing Thailand.

God-damn.

These "Tiger Farms" exist because the Thai government allows them to exist.
First in a "Tiger Farm."
Then in a "Tiger NGO."

Fools.  Everyone.  All of these animals belong in a preserve.  Fat chance.  Then - some corporate head decides he is above the law and decides to go hunting.  <slap slap slap>  <--- The sound to wet bamii noodle slapping the back of the billionaire's hand.

I think you are being over-simplistic here - they are trying to improve their position in a very complicated situation.

I think you are covering your ignorance with cynicism - read the article for a start.

It's a farm - so it is a business for producing tigers - many females are kep alive for speed breeding - so long as they can produce a chain of litters they are proitable -  the males are required for sperm.

If ever you see pigs suckling cubs and tigresses suckling pigs, this is part of the speed breeding process.

Many tiger farms have "wineries" behind or near them - these are for the processing of tiger carcasses into TCM.

Animals dont have to be looking good for farming only the nes in public view are kept groomed etc.

Yep. And science dictates that they are all wrong.

Science dictates nothing it proves... the key is scepticality or critical thinking.

the problem being with wildlife in Thailand, the authorities don't subscribe - they believe in tradition.

THe most common argument for instance with elephants is a fallacious appeal to antiquity - "as we've had elephants for thousands of years, we must be right?"

This is the kind of thinking that is destroying Thai ecology.
