Russian Tourists Rescued After Huge Waves Split Boat In Half Off Pattaya

A BIG GROUP of Russian tourists and Thai divers and crew were all safely rescued after huge waves broke their catamaran in two as it was sailing back to Pattaya from a trip to Koh Larn this evening (Dec. 23), Matichon newspaper said.

 

At 6.30 p.m. Sawang Boriboon Foundation rescue centre was alerted of the catamaran having capsized in the middle of the sea approximately four nautical miles from Na Jomtien beach where Pattaya Park Hotel is located and quickly sent  Pattaya City marine rescue team to bring them ashore.

 

The 27 Russian tourists and three Thai divers and crew of the boat, 18 men and 12 women, were all safely rescued but a Russian man and a Russian woman did get injured and were rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Seems late to be out on the waters, the sun already down. 

There have been quite a few boat incidents down in Phuket waters over the last few days too, going out when weather conditions and forecast are not suitable I suspect.

Tourists beware, Thai Captains don't bother looking at the forecast or sea conditions... your baht is more important than your safety.

Big waves? Hardly a typhoon. Unseaworthy boat was the cause of this failure. How often are these tourist/charter boats checked for potential problems? A structural breakup is catastrophic and there would have been evidence of that potential prior to the disastrous event. A captain's duty is to ensure the safety of all on board - a simple matter of keeping the ocean on the outside of the vessel while riding out the sea conditions. It would be assumed that his daily inspection of his ship coupled with an annual survey would suffice in uncovering any defects but are these inspections routine in Thailand or non-existent?

Yes, it was annexed in a special tourist operation. Pattaya Park is almost entirely Russian. Pratamnak next to go.

Must be either a very small catamaran or a catamaran that had many existing BIG problems for this to have happened. The waves here are even a joke compared to carribean.

Probably home made in a rudimentary local workshop as most of the smaller boats and VIP buses are here.

I have this nagging fear that a few boats, that had been left bobbing in the water for 12  months, were rinsed off when the owners saw they had overbooked this year!
