A Bit Of Grammatical Fun

Featured Replies

With English being such a "Fun"language (origins aside), I get to thinking about things that are true but make no grammatical sense:

If you are "childless" you are without child.

If you are "heartless" you are without heart (metaphorically as physically you'd also be dead).

If you can do something that is "effortless" have you actually done anything?

If you are "ruthless" are you then without ruth?

Feel free to add and give counter explanations and/or examples.

And, if YOU are witless?

Then what?

He’d perhaps join a forum & spend his witless hours attempting to convince all & sundry of his wit & intelligence……

Should have known better than to expect any lighthearted fun in here - Hope springs eternal but in here, it just makes the floor wet.

One can be overwhelmed

One can be underwhelmed

but can one ever truly be just whelmed?

Yes, You Can Just Be Whelmed

Whelm is an archaic word that means “to engulf or submerge,” especially in the context of water. For example:

The stormy waves soon whelmed the ocean liner, sinking it to the bottom of the sea.

Nope

Flammable and inflammable.

Surely inflammable must mean it can't burn?

Thanks but I was being sarcastic. It’s a paraphrased quote off the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. Never mind, I’ll get my coat. 😋

Me thinks there be an echo in here

Speaking of "Echo", can there be more than 1?

He echos her thinking simply means repeats which is the premise of an echo.

If done at an earlier time it would be echoed.

If 2 people yell into an echo chamber, does it in fact create 2 separate echos or a single echo of the 2 voices?

As to the original quoted responses: If there is such a substance on Earth that is truly "Inflammable" then why aren't houses in Hawaii or space travel vehicles made of such a substance?

Also, diamonds are created from a "flammable" substance, subjected to great pressure and then become Inflammable but you can't build a house with diamonds unless it's simply funded by them.

If you can be overboard, onboard, underboard, aboveboard, inboard and outboard, then can you not be board?
