If Senate immigration bill is passed Biden vows to Shut Down Border

President Joe Biden has pledged to "shut down the border" the day he signs the Senate immigration bill, which is currently being negotiated and described by him as the "toughest and fairest" set of reforms to secure the border. The bipartisan talks have faced challenges, particularly with mounting Republican opposition. Some Republicans are insisting on a border security deal as a condition for further aid to Ukraine.

However, the House speaker, Mike Johnson, has declared the deal "dead on arrival" in its current form, according to a letter to Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives. President Biden, seeking another term in the upcoming elections, has faced criticism over the surge in migrants crossing the US-Mexico border during his presidency.

The proposed Senate immigration bill includes new limits on asylum at the border, including an expulsion power that allows rapid return of migrants to Mexico if encounters surpass certain thresholds. The expulsion authority would become mandatory if encounters exceed 5,000 per day. This authority is comparable to the Title 42 policy implemented during the Trump administration and ended by Biden in May 2023. The bill also aims to resolve asylum claims within six months without detaining migrants, providing a faster process than the current one.

Former President Donald Trump has expressed concern over any deal that doesn't fully meet Republican expectations regarding border security. President Biden has called on Congress to provide the funding requested in October to secure the border, including additional border patrol agents, immigration judges, asylum officers, and inspection machines to detect and stop the influx of fentanyl at the southwest border. The negotiations and discussions around the immigration bill reflect the ongoing challenges and debates over border security and immigration policies in the United States.

Thanks for reminding me...  Also, like years past, if you hire anyone without a work permit, you should pay a huge fine.

How will they support themselves?  Present yourself to any local police station and we'll buy you a plane ticket home and give you a ride to the airport.  (That's even kinder than Thailand)

If that actually happened more the illegal immigration problem would cease overnight.

No. Biden cannot order anyone be prosecuted by executive order.

He'd take a cue from the headlines and sue them instead.

But seriously, if they're breaking federal law (and they are), the executive branch is the one charged with prosecuting them.

How is the southern border in any way related to Ukraine? This is blackmail. What's wrong with a clean vote on both?

Absolutely nothing wrong with that except that Trump cannot do Americas enemy Putin’s work for him and with the stellar stockmarket low unemployment rate inflation coming down then the retrumplikans have nothing to attack Biden with sad really

Let’s be more precise, it’s not the President’s job to prosecute anyone.

Why? How are they related. Republicans don't have the guts to support a clean bill.  Their politics would be torn to shreds. They support Russia. Period. Traitors.

Ozi, it's US politics isn't it? They do it all the time and defence bills get larded with pork barrel projects. I like it when it helps a cause I support, like now (two causes actually illegal immigration and stopping funding of war, genocide  and murder), but dislike it when it is used by another side to fund wars and encourage illegal immigration. Besides it is holding the process up, I'm not such a fool as to think Americans will suddenly allow peace to break out in Ukraine or Israel by cutting off funds. The GOP does not support Russia at all. A few GOP Congressmen are disgusted with the war and it has given the speaker leverage. I support Russia in the conflict and resent my tax dollars being used to support massive corruption in Ukraine.

But he can pause allowing in all asylum seekers. That would stop the problem immediately.

That makes sense,

but you must remember , we are talking about republicans here,

Sense and them have had an estranged relationship for a long time.

You can barely write a sentence without multiple errors. Politics is about give and take. Finding some shared ground on multiple issues.

Facts stated that are not known must have a link to prove it's true. Rules are rules.

The veracity of some statements is self evident, as is the intelligent  of someone who claims not to recognise a word from the context of a conversation because it was misspelled, or  the inability to recognise an ad absurdum statement and request a link.

Kinda simple solution would be to keep all asylum seekers in detention until their cases are heard. Plenty of room to make nice comfy camps in Arizona and Texas. That would remove the incentive for illegals who actually just want to work illegally to come.  There is no reason to simply release people who are undocumented and unvetted, and ask them to please please return in a few years for their hearing.

I agree 100 or even 120%. But that's what Trump negotiated with Mexico....and Biden can't do that because it would make Trump look good and Biden stupid wouldn't it?......or perhaps that is what you are thinking.

Fair enough. We will never know in any case. We can agree to disagree about the whole "land theft" shibboleth.

As to the border, it only proves what an effective and strong leader VP Harris is. Wasnt this HER issue to solve?

It was indeed, she was crowned the car of the border issue.....I'm not sure she ever even went there, but I might have missed it in the media.

Untrue. The only country at war with Russia is Ukraine.  The US is only involved as a sales rep.  Personally, I would rather see both sides sit down and hammer out a deal without so much interference from the peanut gallery. Or, if Europe is actually serious about Russia being such a threat, then Europe can get motivated to actually help Ukraine win.  Shouldnt be too hard, the collective GDP of the EU is more than 10 times that of Russia. They can easily afford a short, sharp conflict.

Now now now, just who pray tell was a stabbing nato in the guts at every opportunity hummm?just whom had the Russians in the Oval Office on his first day in office?hummm?just who threw our intelligence agencies under the bus at helinsky hummm??why that would be one Donald j trump most Americans see it trump is by mental illness or just by being a straight up traitor to American ideals a abject failure as an American president he ain’t gonna win but take heart he has greatly damaged America so americas enemies must be happy about that!
