Misadventures of a Canadian Family in Russia: A Cautionary Tale

 

In a bizarre turn of events, a Canadian family seeking refuge from what they deemed as "wokeness" and LGBTQ+ acceptance in their home country found themselves in a series of misfortunes upon relocating to Russia. Arend Feenstra, a right-wing YouTuber and patriarch of the family, made the decision to move his wife and eight children to Russia, citing concerns about the perceived liberal ideology prevalent in Canada.

 

However, their grand plan of escaping to Russia quickly turned into a comedy of errors. Despite their noble intentions, the Feenstra family found themselves ill-prepared for life in Russia, lacking even the basic knowledge of the language. This became evident when Anneesa Feenstra, the matriarch, struggled to differentiate between male and female restrooms, highlighting their lack of cultural awareness.

 

Their initial weeks in Russia were marked by acts of kindness from locals, who donated winter clothing to the family and offered assistance with language barriers. However, their goodwill couldn't mitigate the family's financial woes. The Feenstras encountered difficulties accessing their funds due to banking regulations and language barriers, leading to frustration and public outbursts.

 

A video documenting their challenges was posted and subsequently deleted, amidst backlash and accusations of disrespect towards Russia. Arend Feenstra attempted to downplay the incident, attributing it to a "misunderstanding" caused by the language barrier.

As the family grapples with their new reality, they have enlisted the help of Russian authorities for immigration assistance. Yet, their timing couldn't be worse, as Russia has recently intensified its crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights, further complicating their situation.

 

In a bitter irony, the family's attempt to seek refuge in a country perceived as more conservative has only exposed their naivety and ignorance. Their misadventure serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of making impulsive decisions based on misconceptions and ideological biases.

 

As the Feenstras navigate the challenges of life in Russia, one can't help but wonder if their quest to escape "wokeness" has led them to a place where intolerance and authoritarianism reign supreme. He might not hear much about LGBTQ+ (a truly minor issue in the overall scheme of things, but clearly something right wing snowflakes are too weak to ignore), but he's likely to find his income from YouTube will be quashed by lack of free speech in his new paradise of Russia.

 

The good news, however, is he looks young enough to find work going after "Nazis" in neighboring Ukraine. With 8 kids, one or more is likely to be old enough to join him. Since it is possible Ukraine has folks who are part of the LGBTQ+ movement, the guy can try to take out his hostilities on folks there. Of course, they will fight back, but hey...losing your life or the lives of your kids over your sacred cause is surely worth it.

He actually has 9 kids, the oldest is over the age of 18 and noped out of going to russia with the family.

This story is in the news here in Canada, they sold their farm in Saskatchewan and moved to russia.

Can't speak the language, mom posted a video critical of russia and got told in no uncertain terms to STFU

Dad had to post a follow up video saying how great russia is

Deposited their money in a russian bank and promptly got all their assets confiscated by friendly government

Anybody who deliberately moves to Russia has to have their head examined by a very competence psychiatrist. My family left that God forsaken land of Russia several generations ago, and when I asked my last remaining relative about the old country all she could say it was was that it was the worst hell on earth, and that they were thrilled to have escaped.

Spent part of a winter in Siberia in 1999.  Back then it seemed plausible that Russia could become democratic, actually, and integrate into the rest of the world.  Hope was in the air.  Young people were optimistic and very curious about the rest of the world.  Yeltsin really screwed Russia when he handed it all to Putin.  The winter weather was not that bad.  Rather like North Dakota or eastern Montana.  Yakutsk is a whole different thing.

I have been following this family for the same reason it's interesting to look at train wrecks.

The parents are hard core anti LGBT BIGOTS.

They lived in rural Canada and were occasionally exposed to things like rainbow flags when they needed to go into cities.

So because of that they move to Russia, a land ruled by a fascist dictator, where any speech against him or his war of choice (which you're not allowed to call a war) can land you with a long prison sentence or thrown out a window.

His videos feature showing the Russian flag which he calls the new flag of freedom.

Tell that to Navalny.

I consider his family an internal loop small CULT.

I feel both parents are guilty of child abuse.

He openly claims that it was his children (who are of course very sweet) were the reason he moved to Russia because that were offended by the LGBT stuff too.

I don't believe that for a second.

He taught them to be homophobes just as families often teach their kids to be racists.

I think he will probably stay in Russia. He's a great useful idiot for Putin -- great propaganda. I think the Russian government ultimately is invested in more far right wing, anti LGBT, maga, etc. westerners choosing to move to Russia.

Of course they will need to toe the Z Putin line or they'll be screwed.

There has even been talk of building a Maga village specifically for Maga Americans.

He has claimed he has been researching Russia for many years.

I don't doubt he knows a lot about farming.

I can understand getting out of Canada or the US.

Costs are too high, probably too regulated, especially the US wracked by political division. 
But for his purposes there were scads of better choices than Russia all places!

For example Paraguay and I'm sure Spanish is easier to learn than Russian.

He has 8 kids.  If they are unfortunate enough to be white and straight in Canada then they face a potential lifetime of discrimination and racism against them.   It wouldn't be the first time parents have moved countries to give their kids the potential of a better life, but in this case the parents made a poor choice of destination.   Bit like moving from Oceania to Eurasia really.

I know there were tens of thousands of men in Europe who voluntarily joined the German army to fight the Russians (communism) in WWII. Two uncles of mine joined. Wouldn’t be surprised if there were quite a few Americans as well.

 

Arend Feenstra sounds definitely Dutch, by the way. Feenstra is actually a last name that’s very common in the Dutch province of Friesland. So he is either the son of Dutch immigrants, or one of the many farmers that moved from Holland to Canada over the last few decades. Either way, being Dutch myself, I can’t say I’m very proud of my countryman, and that’s putting it very mildly.

That must have been really interesting, and beautiful. I traveled to Russia a few times in the 2000s (Saint Petersburg, Novgorod, Moscow), and if times now were happier, it might indeed be a nice place to live (but I’d sure as heck learn the language). I found these cities, superficially at least, very cosmopolitan and “European.” Of course, visiting Saint Petersburg and Moscow would be like only visiting New York and San Francisco in the US; in Siberia, I’m sure you had a much broader experience (and I’ve read that Yakutsk is the coldest city on the planet). I trust that the Russians will find some way to end their current nightmare and get back on a more integrative, progressive track ...
