We just spent a week in the rural south at Nakhon Si Thammarat. So much cheaper than Pattaya (and that's what GF said).
balo
I guess they choose Pattaya because it is located near the beach . Chiang Mai would be an even cheaper option. Vietnam is cheap too. Maybe they did not do a very good research here.

Instead of Pattaya being totally ignored for the stupid reason of the sex industry, more and more Pattaya is not only mentioned but specifically highlighted. Of course maybe it isn't good if it gets TOO popular, but it is pleasing to get confirmation about what expats here already know -- Pattaya (including the metro area of course) indeed is one of the best places in the world to retire abroad on a budget. As far as the budget part of it, no it isn't the absolute cheapest, but bang for the baht, the value for what you get is incredible. Cut Your Living Expenses in Half By Moving Abroad to These 3 Locations (yahoo.com) What a big surprise. For years I have posted here that those central/south American countries are (or will) turn into "S*it hole" countries. I was right. Thailand is nice this time of year. If nothing else, forking over 25'000 Bht/year to a visa agency assures eternal residency in Thailand. It doesn't get any better or easier or cheaper anywhere else.

I don't agree with either of your points. Thailand offers no residence security for retirees. Latin American countries aren't all s-holes,

If you're saying that Vietnam has another reasonably feasible way to retire there legally with a different visa name as some countries do, no they do not. Vietnam does not want retired expats. Take the message.

I can get a large beer in Pattaya 70 baht, a large chicken/rice dish for 60 baht, tuktuk 10 baht, farang meal 199 or even 99 baht etc. Same prices in 7/11. I have travelled there and didn't notice any big differences in price. Edited March 16 by Henryford
soi3eddie
She said fruit, vegetables and market produce. A full meal at the roadside stalls with the big urns of curry, soup etc. including nam prik, vegetables and dessert for 50-60 Baht.
