Cabinet green lights bills to modify alcohol control law

The afternoon restrictions were introduced in the 70s but revived under the Thaksin dictatorship.

It really is nonsense to think abolishing this old law will create even more death and injury on the roads.

It will however allow restaurants and bars to legally do what many now pay the police to ignore. Hotels all used to say they were "exempt" and give you what you wanted, even on Buddhist days.

Better for business and good for tourism.

Thank you for you information but it has now left me confused!

 

You said in the first quote I referenced;

and yet in your last post you said;

 I accept that having a degree is helpful in getting a job as a journalist with a large newspaper etc but I did not know that if you dropped out of college it meant you had no qualifications to be a journalist!

If they extend the hours you can drink alcohol , they also must increase

the penalties for DUI , one without the other is going to lead to more

injuries and deaths on Thai roads ...thats a given .

How difficult is it to understand that if you drop out of college then you do not take your journalism course exams and are therefore unqualified in the subject you abandoned?

Correct! Wonder if it will allow small independent brewers to sell and advertise their products. As at present they cant unless they supply over a certain (don't know what it is) number, amount, weight, volume.

I am interested in why The Thaiger employs such abysmal writers, and by a minimum of effort discovered they each have a profile. To actually include in this case that the writer has no formal qualifications to be a journalist I suppose speaks volumes of the standards that The Thaiger has. I would have thought they would hide the fact, not broadcast it.

 

By the way, I'm commenting as a journalist of over 40 years who has written for The Times, Daily Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald and all of the agencies among others, so I think I have an insight into what is good journalism and what is not. Sorry too if my experience in the profession might offend you.

I used to think I'd done really well to be a journalist. And then social media came along and I discovered that a sizeable number of people are only semi-literate. On this site, I guess some of what you speak of might be down to English being a second language. I also recognise that not all people are skilled at all things. I, for example, find learning another language close to impossible. Expecially Thai, which has an 'alien' script.

Yes. I find the Thai alphabet the main obstacle to my learning Thai. I usually reckon to learn another language in, say, three years, but with Thai I am still stumbling around with basic phonemes and the tolerant blank faces of my listeners.

Should have changed ages ago.7/11 locking the beer section for 3 hrs every day,when u can go to  any bar for a drink of beer nearby.Does not make sense and the chiangmai sixes on tomorrow and people will sell beer or drink it between the hrs 7/11 lock the beer door.Opening hrs are better people who smoke weed happy and no real problems.advertising is another silly rule and everyone has a fav beer and whether u drink out of a certain glass at the bar no one cares except for the drink inside.It is changing slowly and the gambling or casino law should change too as the thais love to gamble but have  to travel to the borders to do it and they do it often.Keep it in the country and the money stays too.I think  all those silly rules are being updated but very slow

As near as I can determine, all of the proposed bills are all-encompassing, with some more liberal and some more restrictive. Only one bill will be passed (or not) which may contain provisions from some/all of the five (or four, or six) other bills.

 

I think they all cover changes to the Alcohol Beverage Control Law(s), and cover...

 

advertising, marketing of alcohol, this may include fewer restrictions re: social media posts

 

sales hours, retail, restaurants, bars, including special alcohol areas/districts/zones
