Only 66% of payments last year were in cash. Meanwhile, Sweden, the country that pioneered a cashless society, is moving in the opposite direction. In November 2023, the Riksbank or Swedish Central Bank called for cash payments to be protected by legislation despite cash transactions falling to only 1% of GDP.
