Should we invite Steven Pinker to become an Esteemed Member of our AseanNow Forum?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

The question to be considered, this Sunday morn, is whether or not Steven Pinker should be invited to....

Become a Member of our SE-Asian Forum.

In my view, we should send an invitation to Pinker.

Perhaps, Pinker might agree to join our group.

It's worth a try.

Steven hails from Canada, for one.

Also, Steven, after spending time at McGill, decided that Harvard was better, which should not be a mark against him.

Steven is sort of a Linguist.

More than this, though, is that he has a real gift for speaking udderly beautiful sentences and paragraphs.

Such a silver tongue does Steven have, that no one could even imagine, unless one listened to him speak.

But, better to hear him speak about what he calls, "swearing".

Most of us do not consider swearing offensive.

Words are just words, after all.

So, should Steven be invited to join TV?

I think he should because:  Some of us do not know how to even properly pronounce the word....EXCRETORY, even though the excretory act is an important part of our everyday lives.

Well, then, just please listen to these, following, two great videos, and sorry if these two have been heard by you, before:

So then...

Does Steven Pinker sound like a great prospective Member of our Forum?

I say, most definitely.

Your thoughts?

Regards,

Gamma

Note:  This guy can speak English like no other.  Love to listen.  I imagine that you might, too.....

Mastering the art of verbal diarrhea is strong with this one. May the runs be with you.

canada sucks eh.

His books (of which I have 7, mostly actually read) are mostly about reawakening our enthusiasm for Enlightenment optimism, but 'I'm alright, Jack' lurks around every corner.

Too much optimism bolstered by soft data collections becomes ideological cheerleading.

John Gray: "Like so many contemporary evangelists for humanism, Pinker takes for granted that science endorses an Enlightenment account of human reason. ... If there is anything of substance to be derived from an evolutionary view of the human mind, it must be the persistence of unreason."

Unfortunately he is so full of it that he never dries up!

Loved Enlightenment Now and def loved that on the 2nd edition he added a Trump chapter (Synopsis: the fever will eventually break).

He's married to a decent looking, thin, white oldie so he's unlikely to pop into the Island of Broken Toys.

Relatedly, so am I, and I have no real excuse for being here.

Oh God, not another one.

Pluses are his leprechaun inspired suit and the fact that he has probably never held down a real job (or had a haircut) in his life.

This board does need more whining progressives.  Will Chomsky's muse deign to post here?

Pinker is a very interesting writer.

However, in one of his books he attributed the writing of the song "Who Do You Love?" to Ronnie Hawkins.

Anyone with adequate knowledge of English language popular music knows that the song was written by Ellis McDaniels and additionally knows the identity of Ellis McDaniels.

Point being, Pinker is willing to hold forth on some subjects where his knowledge is paper thin, so you gotta wonder about things that he says.
