Thai Businesswoman Loses Over 40 Million Baht in Home Burglary

A robbery worth over 40 million baht ($1 million) occurred at a noted businesswoman's home in Mueang Phetchaburi district, Thailand, raising suspicions about close acquaintances being involved. The victim was Virunpat Vichittapanyarak, 68, a construction contractor, who found her home burgled upon arriving back from a trip to Chiang Mai.

 

Virunpat noticed an unusual key in a drawer outside her bedroom. On opening it, she found cash of 500,000 baht ($13,600), and 30 baht weight in gold missing. Subsequently, items worth around 40 million baht were found missing.

 

These included $27,000 in cash, diamond rings worth more than $27,000 each, gold ornaments weighing over 50 baht, seven jade stones valued at approximately $51,000, diamond necklaces priced around $380,000, and several gold-framed amulets.

 

Reports from Virunpat's son-in-law, Manop Boonpasawai, and his daughter, Aunchalee, who were abroad during the crime suggest that the theft was carried out by an acquaintance, given the undisturbed state of the rest of the house. Adding to the suspicion was the fact that the house's security cameras had been non-functional for a year.

 

Pending investigation, the police have asked local jewelers, diamond shops, and amulet collectors to report suspicious selling attempts of the stolen items. Additionally, the public has been requested to report unusual transactions to the police via the emergency number '191'. The victims are hopeful that the police will apprehend the individuals responsible for stealing their life savings soon.

Many wealthier Thais do have a safe or safety deposit box, for their valuables....but as in this case and others, many don't. Gold and cash in drawers or boxes.....gold for personal decorations and money for counting:))

To my best understanding, home insurances in Thailand normally doesn't cover anything worth stealing!

Actually home insurance policies are not that dissimilar to policies in UK. Gold and amulets etc could have been insured but the premium for the values quoted would have been eye watering. 

No sign of forced entry then yes probably a refused claim anyhow.
