A mate of mine is aged in 40s. He told me an 18 year old is interested in him. In western countries I think this is not a problem. But here I wasn't sure. I told him I thought it was 20 years old.

If he got involved with this girl and it went pear shaped is he in a spot of bother? He has checked her id card. She is 100% 18 yrs old.

Not interested in moral opinions, only legal.

The legal age for consenting to sexual activities is set at 15. Legal adulthood, on the other hand, is acknowledged from the age of 20 onward. While the minimum age for marriage consent is established at 17.

A 40 year old, shouldn't be interested or thinking about hooking up with a "teenager/child". This is Thailand and there are so many girls out there, that are not a teenager that your friend can have a "friendship" with. And then there would be no age issue at all.

Not sure, Lou. My understanding over the years was age of consent, 15 with Mom/Dad consent, 18 otherwise. My Wife is 26 years younger than I but I would not have considered a long term relationship if she had been below mid 20s-mid 30s when we first met. Of course, if a guy is in his 20s, the age thing might work. I would still advise against thinking permanent relationship based on my having married an 18 year old when I turned 21 (USA). Neither of us were "seasoned" enough by life ...

Not sure, Lou.

Well all you have to do is look it up, them, as I did, several times, to confirm the content and accuracy of my posts. The information is easily found from many different credible sources.  The question was "What is the legal age of consent in Thailand" - it is 15.  The OP did not present any qualifying conditions.

I get weirded out even thinking about going with a lady under 25ish and I'm not super-old. Just don't seem right, and what would you talk about? Each to their own though.

Never forget travelling through an Asian airport many moons ago and remarking how pretty and pleasant the 'granddaughter' of this older Japanese guy was. My friend was like, 'that's not his granddaughter, dude!' lol

But, yes, 15 (if you're around that age), otherwise 18.

What makes you "understand" that, anything empirical that you could quote here as I did to back my responses?

What do you mean?  That ("otherwise 18") is not correct, it is 15 with no qualifications in the law that states that only applies to "those around the same age".   The OP's question wanted the legal answer, it's legitimacy, not opinions of it's subjective appropriateness.

This seems to be a common question.

How about: What do you want to talk about?

I.e. I don't talk with my gf about politics, mathematics, rocket science and all those things.

And I am not looking for a gf to talk about things like that. If I want to do that, I have friends.

I talk with my gf about things in our daily life. Those are things everybody of any age can/does talk about.

An 18 year old is a child? 18 means adult, so why lie? 🤔

What issues will there be with an 18 year old adult?

Some people just don't like it.

Because 25 year old Thai girls are going to have significantly more in common, to talk about? lol

Everyone knows that from 18-24 Thai girls only talk about toys and cartoons. Then they hit 25 and start talking about politics and philosophising on the meaning of life.

I just thought: What do I or did I talk about with girls in bars?

I don't really know, we just talk.

And then there is the thing with the chemistry - for no better word for that. With some people we can just talk and talk and talk, it doesn't really matter about what, we just talk. And with others there is nothing, or almost nothing to talk about.

Obviously, that can be a question of education, culture, intelligence and all that. But sometimes it just is. Why? I don't know.

All that really matters is that you love, respect and care for each other (or whatever the Thai equivalent is).  Values are way more important than having identical interests anyway.

Obviously, if the younger partner wants to go out drinking four nights a week and the older partner wants to stay in and read a book, you're going to face some challenges, but women in Thailand seem to be a lot more into working and spending time with family from a young age.  (Probably because they don't get things given to them as easily as their Western cousins.)  Drinking and partying is a pretty big red flag anyway, for some.

And yeah, you could have "click" with someone half your age, then find someone your age that you have nothing in common with.

The "nothing to talk about" is a cope anyway.

Legal Age of Consent in Thailand (siam-legal.com)

read this then you know more.

the source of the text below is part of website Legal Age of Consent in Thailand (siam-legal.com)

Understanding Age of Consent in Thailand

The term ‘age of consent’ specifically refers to the minimum age at which a person is considered legally competent to provide consent for engaging in sexual acts. Individuals below this age do not possess the legal capacity to consent to sexual activities.

In Thailand, the age of consent is set at 15 years old. This implies that individuals aged 14 or younger are not legally permitted to provide consent for any form of sexual activity. If an individual over the age of consent engages in a sexual act with someone below this age, it may be deemed ‘statutory rape,’ and the older person could face legal charges for violating the law.

Unlike some jurisdictions, Thailand does not have a close-in-age exemption, commonly known as “Romeo and Juliet laws.” The absence of such an exemption means that even consensual sexual activity between two individuals under the age of 15 could lead to legal consequences.

It’s important to understand that Thai law makes a distinction between laws regulating sexual activity, as outlined in the Penal Code, and laws governing marriage and family matters, detailed in the Civil and Commercial Code. The legal age for consenting to sexual activities is set at 15. Legal adulthood, on the other hand, is acknowledged from the age of 20 onward. While the minimum age for marriage consent is established at 17.

Other Relevant Laws

Beyond regulations concerning the age of consent, Thailand has specific laws targeting sexual offenses and rape cases, with penalties contingent on factors such as the victim’s age and the nature of the offense.

Recent trends highlight an increase in rape cases throughout Thailand. Section 276 of the Criminal Code specifies that engaging in non-consensual sexual intercourse with an individual, through threats, violence, or exploitation of their vulnerable state, may lead to imprisonment for 4 to 20 years and a fine ranging from 80,000 to 400,000 Baht.

For cases involving minors, penalties intensify. If the victim is under 15, irrespective of consent, the offender could face 20 years in prison and a fine of 80,000 to 400,000 Baht. If the victim is under 13, the imprisonment term varies from 7 to 20 years. Armed offenses against a minor may result in a life sentence.

Regarding indecent acts, the procurement, seduction, or abduction of individuals for such acts may result in imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine of up to 200,000 Baht. Offenses against those aged 15 to 18 or under 15 carry more severe penalties, including life imprisonment or death.

Thailand’s legal framework also addresses issues such as child prostitution and pornography. The Child Protection Act and the Criminal Code include provisions dealing with sexual violence against children. Offenses like producing, possessing, or distributing obscene material can lead to imprisonment and hefty fines.

Prostitution and the sale of sexual services are technically illegal in Thailand. Child prostitution carries even more severe consequences, emphasizing the moral and ethical implications of such actions. The intricate legal landscape underscores the importance of legal awareness to ensure compliance and protect individuals from sexual offenses and exploitation.

Its another thing I am legally consent in social behaviour and another thing I consent I have my own responsibility for any criminal activity.

I am sure that if the girl has closed her 18s legally is responsible for marriage as well as to have her own driver licence and she doesnt need parents consent.

Generally age of consent and legality as human being its a dispute point in many societies for example in Europe you dont need your parents consent to have sex with any adult if you are over 16 but if your age is less than 16 years old then you are untouchable according to the Law even if you proceed for criminal activity.

Example if you are on your 14s or 15s or 16s and you make an armed Bank roberry then police Authorities legally do not have any right to touch you because you are minor and Police Athorities call juvenile prosecutor orders and psychologist.

I know many minors in Greece/Athens on their 14s-16s who always participate in demonstrations with contract (money) and from the "leader" of demonstartors have orders to burn cars or shops infront of Police Authorities without any arrest.

Minors are double side knives in our society "golden boys" for any "job" criminal activity and unfortunately Police officers do not have any right to touch them because first it needs juvenile prosecutor to be notified and Police officers turn their eyes in an another direction leaving criminal activities to continue.

Oh this old chestnut again.    Well sorry to burst the bubble of all the sexpats and sex tourists but unless you are a Thai citizen it don't matter what the legal age of consent in Thailand is.

You can quote all the Thai laws you want but the only thing that matters is what the legal age of consent is in your own country, because virtually all western countries have sex tourism laws that target their own citizens who travel to other countries like Thailand to have sex with young children that they otherwise would not be able to legally do in their own country.

So if you think the Thai law that says 15 years old is fine, then you are potentially committing a crime in your home country that could put you in prison for decades.   So even if the courts can't prosecute you here, you can be sure of one thing, the Thai's love handing pedos over to Western law enforcement.

Don't be ridiculous. No one on this Forum is advocating having sex with minors or suggesting such a crime is "fine".  Have you even read the thread?
