Free Trade Agreement Nearing Completion Between Thailand and EU

Thailand is close to concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) within this year. The agreement, part of efforts to stop illegal and unruly fishing activities, came to light during the Europe Day 2024 celebrations in Bangkok, hosted by the EU embassy.

 

Europe Day, celebrated every year on May 9, is a commemoration of European peace and unity. It also marks the anniversary of the declaration made by France's foreign minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950. Schuman's proposal aimed to avoid another Europe-wide war by ensuring joint efforts in the production of coal and steel.

 

During the celebration, Jakkapong Sangmanee, the Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, said that the Thai government intends to finalize the FTA with the EU within the current year. He noted that this agreement would likely boost the economy in both regions, benefit businesses, and strengthen supply chains.

 

Jakkapong assured that Thailand is ready to work with the EU for sustainable economic growth while pledging stronger efforts against unruly fishing activities. He stressed the importance of working closing with the EU on this matter, keeping in mind the focus on sustainable practices and preserving workers' livelihoods.

 

David Daly, the EU Ambassador, also expressed the EU's readiness to collaborate with Thailand on the FTA talks. Observing that investments had increased on both sides, he highlighted that the EU is now the third-largest investor in Thailand, creating over 160,000 jobs.

 

Furthermore, Daly suggested that the two parties can deepen their cooperation in areas like sustainable development, climate changes, and ocean management.

There are apparently provisions in the FTA that refer to Thailand pursuing the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and forced labour. 

 

As I understand it, the idea is to ensure that any exports of fish to the EU from Thailand are from legitimate sources.

Is that the purpose of the FTA, or is it just one section of a larger agreement? In particular, will the FTA reduce tariffs on wine?

From what I can tell, it's just one small provision in a wide-ranging agreement. I have no info about wine tariffs, I only looked for info about illegal fishing.

FTA with the EU, are they aware of the "luxury tax" imposed on most items that enter Thailand, that makes most imported items especially food/drink very expensive compared to locally priced items?

If the fish are caught illegally then it cannot be exported to the EU.

Part of the FTA bans illegal fishing practices.

European economy is a sick economy since all factories have "migrated" to China. After corona period, the European economy is based on fake growth and investment figures. All countries have increased their State Debts and in order to reduce it, they increase the prices of products in their internal market with fake figures that increases the GDP and again with fake data reduce the Debt in accordance with the Maastricht Treaty of the European Union. It's called corporate greed. Lower manufacturing costs, increase profit margins. Corporations put profit ahead of nationalism unless the latter gives them an economic advantage, ie., trade wars.

European sanctions against Russia and cancellation of Russian energy supplies due to the Ukraine war was a national security issue resulted in increased domestic manufacturing costs that cut profits and added to inflation. Thus, the corpirate gold rush to China for its cheaper manufacturing cost, lack of energy sanctions and better profit margins.

Thanks for answering my inquries but the only thing I can figure it out is that if you impose sactions to China -Russia then indirectly impose tarrifs in your civilians.

For example I want to buy a good made in China in Europe apartheid then when the parcel arrive in custom office at the airport the Tax office add 24% VAT + the price difference between the country of production and internal market price of European apartheid.

When you impose sactions against Russia L.N.G then indirectly you increase all the prices of your sales products in your internal market furthermore you should be at least stupid when you impose sactions in Russian L.N.G natural gas and at the same time you import from U.S.A / Luissiana and Baltimore oil and L.N.G natural gas in double price.

European apartheid do not have domestic production of L.N.G and oil resources and they import L.N.G from Qatar -Norway and 50% from Russia -U.S.A market. 

The only country in European apartheid that have huge hydrocarbon deposits is Greece where both U.S.A and Russia don't let Greece to procced in hydrocarbon mining for obvious reasons because both U.S.A -Russia sell L.N.G natural gas in higher prices .......

when you go into villa it says imported. that's why. it was cute 20 years ago when i first went to thailand. now it just looks so stupid and lame.

this will be a total nightmare for customs brokers and logistics workers on both ends. more so the european end. 

 

verifying thai paperwork as legit etc. what a farce.
