Would be interesting to know if he speaks Thai.

Their life is quite normal because both of them are working. 🙏. So, not comparable with retiree's life.

Yes. he does speak Thai.  I often watch his Youtube videos where he talks about things Thai and farang, or about life on the farm.

He is a reformed alcoholic who I think settled for country life to get away from the temptations of Phuket.  He portrays quite a happy, easy going lifestyle, but he does have a few small businesses on the go, such as selling Lion's head mushrooms and supplements online to bolster his income. He seems like a nice guy who has found his happy spot with his wife and young children. Good for him.

I've no need to wonder as I have been in rural Thailand for 15 years.

The bamboo man is less than 1 per cent of farang life in rural Thailand and is therefore not representative, certainly regarding my associates, who live in normal housing with maybe a dog thrown in.

We've come here to retire not work farms, shops etc that's for the Thai members of the family.

What is retirement for you?

For some living a normal day to day life, caring for garden, animals, and hobbies, is what is giving some retirees a purpose to still get up in the morning.

I would like to know what idea most have about  an happy retirement?

Not a whole lot of difference from living in USA, except no job to go to, two days a week.  And a lot more 'one night' stands, or friends w/bennies.   Only in relationships/married about 10 of 25 years in USA.  Lots of dating, clubbing, alcohol & ganga, along with some hobbles.

In relationship/married 20 or 24 yrs here / TH.  Not so much alcohol & ganga, actually no alcohol of late.   Same 'one nigh stands' (non P4P) as USA when single in TH, but less time doing, being single.  Single life, easy & fun in both location, USA & TH.

A lot more driving O&A in TH, as USA, too large, and I'd fly everywhere, for O&A every couple weeks or month, and just rent a car when there.

Not much difference in retirement TBH, 2 less days of being at a job,   A lot less chemical abuse on the body in TH.  A lot more physical outdoor activities in USA, since weather much better, and cleaner, clearer, fish filled seas to dive in, and clean rivers to play on & in.

Heat & pollution in TH, the only negatives.

Taxes only negative in USA, unless needing healthcare.

Aside from those few things, nothing different in retirement.  Oh yea, raised a kid here.  No kids of my own in USA, Did date 1 gal that had 2 kids, and that was a fun (short) learning experience.

Only difference I see in TH, for retirees, more options for introverts to enjoy a sex life, though could get expensive,   All depends on how well retirement was planned financially.  Seems many, didn't plan to well.

Sex when I feel like it, as much British, Indian and Mexican food as I want, a nice house to live in with a big TV and fast internet, unlimited free books, music, TV shows and movies, sunny days I can cycle, and my rabbits.

I'm living the dream!

Seems to be a lot of illegal work going on in that household

Hahahaha yeah and it's a good job he's not letting anyone know he is working on his youtube channel with 200k subscribers.
I was scared to harvest a single bunch of rice in my girlfriends field last year just in case the immigration plod were hiding in the bushes!

In one of my trips to rural Thai, I met a Thai girl.   She grew up farming.   When not farming, she stays home and takes care of her siblings and nephews and nieces from her brother.  I like that she knows and loves to cook.  I will visit her again.

Have your 'banging' trips to Cambo come to an end now?

'Rural' is subjective ... I consider us living rural

... closest neighbor is 100+ meters away

... East of us is pineapple fields for ~500 meter

... South of us, is endless coconut groves

... live on an unpaved, dead end soi

But ...

... <5 kms / 5 mins from surf, if not catching traffic lights.  Can walk or cycle to it.

... main, minor town 5 kms away, population of only 26k people

... no private schools or private hospitals

Rural, but close to all that is needed.

When living in Udon Thani, also lived rural, but, 20 mins from one of the largest metros in TH, with all of the good & bad that supplies.

I couldn't live in extreme 'rural', more than 1 hour from any minor or major town.  When O&A, we drive through some lovely areas, for an hour or so, before seeing anything that resembles a town.

Lovely ... but ... not for us, and ease of everyday living.  If aging, and or, having health issues, you may want more than just 1 govt hospital at your disposal.

Same here,

One of 250 houses in gated community, rice fields all around (now transformed to abandoned building land).

12Km to the moat in CM, 200m to rural roads, jungle, lakes, mountains.

50m to 7/11, pizza orders arrive in 20 mins.

Don't have to wonder. Been there, done that.

It's fine if you don't get too involved with the flora and fauna there.

And NEVER take your missus back there. Worst mistake you can make in Thailand.

Lucky you ... we are just out of the delivery distance for local 7-11 & Pizza Co, although, I've seen deliveries made 200 meters away ... bastards :cheesy:
