An Indian tourist was brutally assaulted and robbed in Pattaya early yesterday. Gobi Manimaran, 34, was ambushed by a gang in front of the White Rose Hotel during the early hours.

The attackers pounced without warning, stealing his iPhone 10 and US$50 (approximately 1,750 baht) before fleeing into the night.

A passerby, who witnessed the terrifying incident, quickly came to Manimaran's aid. Together, they reported the crime at Pattaya Police Station, keeping hopes high for swift justice.

“We need to check the CCTV footage,” declared the helpful bystander. Despite their determination to track down the criminals immediately, the hotel management insisted the police be notified first.

The police promptly recorded the incident and dispatched an investigative team to review the hotel's CCTV footage. They assured Manimaran that they would leave no stone unturned in their hunt for the perpetrators.

In related developments, Thai Government spokesperson Chai Watcharong recently highlighted the success of a new visa-free policy for Indian tourists, effective from May 11 to November 11. This initiative aims to boost tourism and stimulate Thailand’s economy.

Bookings by Indian tourists surged by 60% between 2022 and last year, according to Airbnb data. Searches for accommodations in Thailand by Indian tourists increased by over 200% during major holidays, such as the Holi Festival and Easter this year.

The unfortunate incident with Manimaran casts a shadow on efforts to attract more Indian tourists, but authorities remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

If it's not Phuket, then it's Pattaya. People with ill intentions seem to gravitate towards the two...

Any particular reason why?

I really was expecting to read about gold necklaces and ladyboys... this is a bit more discouraging, really... getting rolled (for an iphone and $50) is wrong place/wrong time. But it's really the type of crime Thailand had better address, else no one feels safe.

Indians mainly arrive to smoke cannabis.... let's see what happens to them if it is banned.

Nothing good happens during the early hours anywhere in the world, not just Thailand.

The guy has missed out on his holiday insurance because his gold necklace should have been stolen also.

COVID destroyed Thailand. An awful lot of Thais are unemployed and have no money. The crime rate has increased but hopefully all will return to normal for the Thais.

Is it me or does it seem like a disproportionate number of crimes that happen in Thailand, seem to happen in Pattaya? And the same seems to apply to crimes committed against tourists.

It's terrible to be subjected to something like this, but the crime rates against foreigners committed in Thailand are still very, very low. However each and every crime seems to attract a lot of attention

not only common knowledge but common sense.

Any tourist hotspots around the world attracts higher levels of crime.

Just like NYC will have higher crime rate than some small town, why? more people, more opportunity and less chance of being caught

"Robbed............Assaulted................Pattaya"

All too familiar (almost daily on AseanNow) a story for this "family friendly" resort.

The only thing missing is "ladyboy" or "transgender person".

Just tell them to stay away from Walking Street - problem solved!

Agreed. In over 50 years I've never even felt threatened in Thailand, let alone attacked. However I have been mugged twice in metro Manila, and once in South London.
