She didn't bet on the Thai lottery so what's the relevance of that?

Congrats, but they just have a low-education mindset! 9Mio THB still won’t get you anywhere close to retirement in Thailand still being in your 40s. They should have re-invested that money, work a few

That has to be the most idiotic comment of the week

Good luck to them, I hope they have a great future here in Thailand.

At age 45 I wonder what Andy will do here in Thailand for an income... he won't find work as easily as his wife did in England.

Yes but how much money do they spend on gambling per week lottery euro millions horse racing bingo post code lottery the list is endless

Well your cobblers list is, you know nothing about any other bets she may not have made.

Now doubt she came out ahead, but your disregarding the 1000 pounds a year she lost for the previous ten years.

And you're fabricating speculative cobblers.

Not sure why she wants to come back knowing her husband can't live here as she can in the UK.

Congrats. And congrats on managing to build a 6 bedroom dream home for 2m baht!.

Yes I'm thinking built on Her families land somewhere in rice paddy land, and of course in Her name.

He can on a marriage extension, and get a work permit, but that would be very limited, especially if she has no plans to work.

Hmmm…. Soooo wonderful… sigh

Construction costs have gone up a lot and even in the rural areas 47,000 Sterling does not get that far, maybe a 2 bedroom house?

Actually, you could build a simple 2/3 bed house for about 750,000 Baht. In rural areas. Well below 47,000 GBP.  Though I'm not sure how simple a 6 bed house you could get for 47,000 GBP which is about 2.2 million baht at current exchange rates.

Stupid statement. It is already changing their lives. I wouldn't sniff at 200K

And how would you know that?

Do you know them personally?

Have you ever met them?

Or are you spouting something that you have no idea about.

So at 45 he can live here without working ? unless the 'former Firefighter has a good pension it won't be easy, supporting 'his' family, no mention of what job he has now, 7m left won't go far at his age, and it is Her money,  and he'll need nearly 1/2 million in the bank to get his yearly extension. School fees etc. I'm not being negative IMO just saying how it is. I wish them good luck and 'Their' children no mention of them though how many or there ages or where they have been living, or where 'Her' house will be.

Try dividing 800,000 by 47 and see if you can make it equal 1/2 million anything.

Winnings from gambling/lotteries are not taxable in the UK.

But the interest earned on the capital sum is taxable.

Good luck to her. Hard working lady by the sound of it. Just hope the vultures don't decend in force when they return and make their life a misery.

Nine million baht is not such a lot if right at the get go you need a 6 bedroomed house. Cost of living in Thailand is not what it was.

But 99% not in Nakhon Nowhere, where her family comes from. Maybe he can work as an English Teacher for 20k THB in the local school, but that’s it 😂 If he would be smart enough being able to work remote online with a decent income , they surely would already have moved to Thailand long ago.

Gambling winnings are tax-free in the UK. Unless gambling is your profession, such as a poker player. For regular punters, you don't pay tax on winnings.

interesting. How do inland revenue know it is your profession?

On the US gambling winnings are taxable. People who win those huge lotteries pay income tax.

If you hit more than 1199 dollars on the pokies the machine locks up and a slot attendant comes out for you to show ID and sign an IRS  form or else they take 30 percent off the top. You submit this with your income tax return.

You can actually deduct gambling winnings up to the amount of your losses, Im told

This is tracked by players cards people register with at casinos for points and freebies.

Or maybe can show a foreign passport and convince them you are a tourist.

is the hubby not entitled to half of the proceeds and wanting to spend it on something else...

she is complaining about 14 hour work day, but how much did she earn compared to 350 baht per day in TH

does she not have to pay 35% on inwards remittance ???

Well looks like we BOTH made a mistake he only needs 400k for a marriage extension, and you try getting 47 baht for 1 GBP come to that.

I know a British guy who sold up and came with his Thai wife to retire here, 2 years before he was due to collect his state pension. He had 250K GBP from the sale of his house when he arrived. This was 3 years ago. He now has less than 150K GBP. I wonder just how long that will last before he has no other option than to return to the UK penny less. He had already built a house some years ago.

So OK these people can build their house for 47,000GBP Maybe buy themselves a nice new Pickup or sedan. But Just how long will 9 million baht last.

I guess it's horses for courses! And the type of lifestyle one hope to have.

Maybe he does support her, and she's been saving the vast majority of her earnings for a few years? Ever think of that? It does happen.

Or sending money to her family here like most do.

Money changes people. Whispering relations. Etc. I think that Andy will be sent back to the UK to work one day when the money starts to run out. The 9 million Baht won't last that long, especially since they didn't keep it a secret.

I'm not sure at 40 years of age he could apply for a 1 year Non O visa based on Marriage? Thought you had to be at least 55 years of age! And the current exchange rate mid market is 46.96 Baht to 1 GBP.

You thought wrong no matter what age you are if your married to a Thai you can get a marriage extension, and the age for retirement Extension is 50. Depending whether they married here or in the UK, if in the UK then he/they will have to register their wedding here. If they married here then easy peasy.

Listen Brainstillmissing (not sure if spellcheck is working). You have absolutely no idea of their financial situation but decided to be negative straight away. What a sad sad outlook on life, you certainly are a glass half empty type of guy.

This is not unusual in the UK.I've come across it quite a bit.

A Thai lass that won't get off her fat arse over here turns into super grafter in England.

Well done lass,well deserved.

I think you think too much. If you made some poor life choices do not project them onto others. Reads like you are another glass half full guy.
