2022 Free Trade Agreement - Can we now ship our personal goods AU->TH for only 7% VAT?

Featured Replies

Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect. Items shipped to Thailand are subject to:

1. Import Duty as specified: Integrated Tariff Database (customs.go.th)

2. 7% Value Added Tax.

10 years ago it was unfeasible to ship personal effects from Australia to Thailand for fear of those Import Duties being imposed on their original value, (other than if you had a 1 year visa + work permit, for an exemption), so many of us left our "stuff" with family back home.

However, in the Customs Database listed above, it appears that there's both an ASEAN, as well as a Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement, which specifies Exempted status on nearly everything since 2022.

This leads me to believe that all the crap I've left at my family's house in Aus can now be shipped out to Thailand, and I will pay 0% Import Duty + 7% VAT on it when it arrives. Am I crazy; does this only apply to companies with permits, or does it apply to private individuals as well?

Has anyone sent a large box of stuff from Aus to Thailand in the past 2.5 years - did you get stung on import tax (if so, what kind of item was it) or was it just the 7% VAT charge on arrival?

You’ll need a manufacturer’s certificate of origin for each item proving its of Australian origin (meaning manufactured there) and then fill out a specific form requesting to be exempt from duties under the FTA. not sure if you can do that as a private person, but good luck getting the certificates of origin from the Oz manufacturers. What stuff of value do you have that’s manufactured in Oz?

Well, that is exactly what I've missed about this whole thing. Thank you for pointing that out.

For all our random crap, full Duties + VAT, it remains. No point pursuing it further.
