Earthquake Rocks Bangkok: Building Collapses with 40 people inside
Its very hard to find good workers in Hua Hin. A friend has a house buiulding and renovation company and curses the problems he gets with even the simplest of jobs. I find it hard to get somebody to do some small improvements, and even then end up doing most of it myself because they are usually bad at doing anything properly. FYI, there are faults in the supply of major building materials. I built my own house 15 years ago, i am a chartered engineer and checked things. Reinforcing bars have a system where you can buy below standard sizes that are factory rejects. Roof steel channels have wrong grading stamped on them, the standard size is stamped on the pieces but there are three grades of the standard code sizes sold, I found that the smallest is half the section area of what the code grade should be. Its not cheating, because at the main suppliers you pay for the weight. Unscruplous builders buy them and cheat becxause they appear to be the size stated on the design. No wonder you see roofs sagging. We bought all the concrete materials from consistent sources. I had some mixed initially and made cylinders that I got tested to confirm strength was ok. The local builders thought I was looney. Never seen a slump cone before or made test cylinders. -

7.7 Quake Shakes Myanmar, Thailand on Alert for Aftershock
well looking at the news and photos people dont know how to evacute a building they are all milling aroud the front entrance and sitting on the steps instead of going to a safe area away from the building have you never been in a fire drill !! and that is just a dangerous assumption "People already know how to evacuate buildings" and you need the goverment to mandate this -

Thailand's Digital Card Chaos: Say Goodbye to TM6, Hello to Confusion!
I didn't have to fill in a TM6 when I came back to Thailand this week, nor the last time I flew in, last year. Immigration have all my info from my visa extension ( retirement) so once they've scanned the passport and checked the biometrics, it's all linked up in their database - and that's that. Presumably the new Eform is only for visitors and tourists. Incidentally last week, a S African friend of my son's was refused entry at Suvarnabhumi last week and had to fly home. Reason given: "too many tourist visas". I'll see if I can get more details. -

Does the U.S. Even Have Real Allies Anymore Under Trump 2.0?
Some years back, I remember reading a theory that America, already in decline from its best days, would need to let other regional powers rise. In other words, China would be the power influencing Asia-Pacific without any major challenges, the US would hold the power of influence over the Americas, Russia would also be a power allowed to do what it wants, and Europe would need to band together for their own good. It seems to me that Trump is putting that theory into practice. His threats to Canada, Panama and Greenland, seem to support this. And his relationship and attitude toward's Putin's aims seem pretty clear by now. Trump's position on China is not clear yet. He seems to be a bit hesitant there (maybe because of the US debt they could call in). Would Trump really go toe to toe with China if the latter invaded Taiwan? Maybe he'd hold back? Anyway, Trump could be in the early days of executing the regional power theory..
