Mornington Crescent

Featured Replies

Do we have any "Mornington Crescent" afficianados here? Any glitterati of the game?

It's a game that I've just become aware of, though it's been played for years. I'm still learning the gambits, versions & abridgements, but I'm willing to give a game a go if there are any other takers... :o

OK, Charing Cross is a popular opening gambit, but I feel like taking more of a risk than that, so....

Marylebone

Your move.

There was a game played on the forum some time ago. It took me some time to become au fait with the rules.

Goodge Street

Oh, very canny, Old Croc. Hmm, think you may be playing a version I don't know all that well, but I'll try to counter....

OK, time to go south of the water, methinks

Lambeth North

Mornington Crescent

Perhaps we should try a Real Geography version?

Rules

No A Traveller, you've got it wrong! The next obvious move is 'Victoria'!

So, Victoria.

Viaduct Street, Vauxhall.

Legal move defined by the abridged edition of 'Mornington Crescent my way" Tim Brooke-Taylor circa 1972.

Hmm, very interesting moves here....

Going to need to think a bit.

Got it! A gambit from the infamous "Borneo/Sarawak" games of the 1950's - being constantly sozzled with gin added a certain piquancy to their games, I feel

PIMLICO

Thani rot fai Surin..............try and get ANYWHERE from there.

Dong Rak (always one of my favourite place names) about 10,000 km off topic.

Pimlico >>>>>>> Victoria Street, Westminster.

right then.. I'm in..

Next station The Bank via Monument

Don't forget.. any moves via the monument must be followed by a double back from any station on the Northern Line, failure to comply will mean a bus detour.

See the Alex Higgins Pot black ammendment 1982 for more details

totster :o

Having had the rules really explained by secret PM, my move is:

Waterloo Station, which earns double points for showing compassion to the homeless living under the Bridge.

I've searched for a rule that disallows this move but there is none. However, if anyone has a rule book more up to date than the WR 1990 edition which encompasses any restricted use of the Jubilee Line, please advise.

Canary Wharf

Ahh ..... the old Canary Wharf ploy...... first used by Willie Rushton on 17th Sept 1972, he nearly served time for that.

Threadneedle Street.

Threadneedle Street.

I call for an umpire's inquiry into that move. Threadneedle Street is effectively Bank and therefore, IMO, a violation of Rule 176, Section 2, Article B. Whilst the legality of the move is being considered, I'll anticipate a favourable decision and move to:

Mile End

A copy of your objection has been emailed to the Official Mornington Crescent Omsbudsman in London, Yorkie & we await their decision. You are aware of the penalties for an incorrect challenge, I hope? :o

All right, we'll go from Mile End. Interesting choice. I believe throwing a six entitles me to move any of number of places I wish?

So,

Elephant & Castle

Assuming we are playing the variation where stations named after former English cricketers are allowed:

Tufnell Park.

As Tufnell was renowned for his inability to catch anything, I'm going to invoke the Hammersmith jink maneuver (I know it's early in the game!) and proceed directly to:

THE OVAL

That's torn it .... I now need to invoke the Wellington Codicil, to maintain fair play, I will not need to retreat three go's and I will take just one. Plus I just rolled a six, which becomes eighteen ...... where do I go?

Tooting Bec.

Oh my giddy aunt! Taddy is a strategist. Similar to a game I once played in the world cup in Helsinki. I’ll have to think about it and get back...

I'm beginning to get the hang of this:

Clapham Junction.

Hmm.. I'm going to assume you mean Clapham Common..

From there I will got to Canada Water via London Bridge.. you'll see I was careful not to stop at any station that starts with the letter "A" .. which of course is not allowed as per the 1872 Clapham ammendment.

totster :o

  • Author

I think you'll find the Clapham amendment may have been instituted in 1872, totster, but was actually passed into the rule book in June 1873.

Now we've cleared that up, hmm <thinking> where to go? Where to go?

You haven't left me much choice in the matter, have you, totster. Almost blocked me in... I say almost, as I'm going to use the Aberdeen manoeuvre (circa 1965), which will allow me to proceed straight to

Poplar

A pox on all you rule book readers, thwarted again I resort to a name that combines important ingredients in an Australian's life.

CockFosters

This is getting silly! And considering same, I'll move to one stop short of Barking:

East 'Am

Ooops! Scead jumped in there before me. I've reconsidered my move but concluded that I'm too bloody lazy to change

There's an old MILL by the stream..Nelly Dean......This bloody music hall's enough to drive anyone up the WALL

Millwall

Sceadugenga makes protests to the last four gos, uses his extra moves to send then to Marylebone Station, moving them back to chance, where the well stacked deck of Go to Jail cards sends then directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200 pounds.

  • Author

Pay attention, Sceadugenga! We started on Marylebone - you can't go there again! OK, so that nullifies your go and loses you 500 points, never mind your monopoly money!

So, by nullifying the Jabberwock's cousin, that means the way is clear for me to progress to

All Saints
