A woman from Thailand signed up for a 10,000 baht digital wallet on the Tang Rat app, instead she was notified of an unpaid traffic fine, stirring concerns about data privacy. This incident has alarmed the public and sparked debates over the security of personal details being given and linked to different databases during app registration.

The woman divulged her ordeal online, sharing that after signing up to receive the 10,000 baht digital wallet, she was alerted to an unpaid traffic fine. She posted a screenshot of the notification and condemned the app's handling of her information. She disclosed that her father intended to settle the fine based on the app alert.

The peculiar incident exhibits potential risks and unexpected repercussions linked with sharing personal information online. It has urged many individuals to reconsider the way they disclose their details and the trust they place in digital platforms.

Despite the outcry, there has been no official response on the matter or any clarification regarding the data management and protection strategies in the Tang Rat app. The situation has ignited wider discussions about transparency and responsibility of digital services in handling user data.

The incident raises significant questions not only about the Tang Rat app but also about the practice of data privacy and protection across Thailand. Users are advocating for more stringent rules to ensure their data is not misused or linked without their approval.

In the meantime, authorities are urging individuals who have signed up or are thinking of registering for the digital wallet to remain vigilant and knowledgeable about how their data is used. This serves as a reminder of the importance of data privacy and highlights the potential risks linked to digital platforms.

To be expected really. The government does not have a great reputation for data security - especially with phone apps.

Why is this a data security issue? It seems prudent to remind someone that they OWE the government money while they are collecting free money from the government.

Yep. The digital wallet scheme is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.

Wife got the app and applied. She says the app also showed her the traffic violations we had previously paid. I think it is a good idea. Too many Thais never pay their fines and continue as if they never got the ticket in the first place.

And some Thais have a reputation for not paying fines.

they are worried that it 'starts' with tickets, but it can lead to abuse by the gvt who now has all their personal data on file. she would have to pay next time she registers her car for the annual windshield ticket anyway but now that her data is in the cloud, well...

People think the government's data and digital systems are compartmentalized, they're not.

Thailand 4.0 is all about knowing everything about everybody and with the right clearance being able to see a holistic view of an individual.

Location (GPS) tracking, all phone calls, all SMS messages in & out, all emails, all bank accounts, all bank transactions, linking bank transactions to their GPS location, taxes paid, restaurant eating habits, flights, browsing history, search history, traffic fines, police station interaction, government office interaction, etc, etc, etc.

For sure they will clawback unpaid traffic fines from your 10,000 baht digital wallet, same with o/s taxes.

I thought data collection was their side benefit from all this nonsense, current bunch probably don't like the "ripe for the picking" grey economy running underneath everything here.

I don't understand the panic. If the traffic (or any other) violations are in the system and linked to someone's id card then the government already has all the person's details

Don't be a bad citizen. Pay your fines and stop acting a victim.

I do not work for a government troll farm.

Funny that for a traffic violation issued by a policeman, you get a ticket. Speed cameras send the photo and fine to your house. How many ways are there to ignore a violation?

If they could deduct the fine from the 10,000 Baht app it would make a lot of sense.
