Confusion over delayed billion-baht terminal project at Trang Airport

Residents are demanding answers about the postponed opening of the new 1.2 billion baht passenger terminal at Trang International Airport in southern Thailand. The terminal, which was due to be completed and open by April 22, is still unfinished and in a state of disrepair.

Locals from Trang have made complaints to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), claiming that the incomplete airport project has cost them potential benefits from the tourism industry. Many are worried the project could be dropped completely, resulting in wasted funds as they've seen happen with other local projects.

In response, the NACC has called on the Department of Airports to explain the construction issues. On August 14, Yuttana Wimonmueang, an official from the Trang Provincial NACC Office, visited the airport alongside officials from the Department of Airports.

Yuttana reported the total construction budget for Trang Airport at 4.66 billion baht, with 1.2 billion dedicated to the terminal now overdue and neglected for over four months. Damages including water leaks, ceiling collapses, dead vegetation, broken water pipes and faulty electronic devices were noted during the site visit.

Kornchakot Prasawang, an architect from the Department of Airports, has claimed that the terminal is 98.3% complete. He suggested that the construction firm's financial issues have hindered the project's completion. Following project delays, the contractor has been hit with considerable fines, amounting to over 100 million baht.

A solution will be sought at a meeting with the contractor on April 19. Until then, Jirapha Hinmala, Director of Trang Airport, has said it is currently impossible to provide a completion or opening date for the terminal. However, she promised it would open as soon as possible, with more updates following the meeting.

I'm sure the funds were not wasted.

If the fines have been paid then terminate the contractor and use the 100 million to pay a new one.

Contractor meeting on April 19 planned? Shurely shome mistake ? (Private Eye magazine reference).

Forget the meeting updates and do your job. Mandate an opening date and do whatever is necessary to make that happen.

Haha, not going to happen and never was.

My error.. of course you are 100% correct.

The terminal far from being in a shocking state now looks like a couple of villas a brace of Ferraris and some shiny stuff 🤔
