Thai customs officials have impeded shipments carrying illicit drugs that were camouflaged in regular items and directed to Australia and Germany. The total market worth of the intercepted drugs stands at more than 14.74 million baht.

Phanthong Loikulnunt, the spokesperson for the Customs Department, reported the seizure. In the first instance, the customs office at Suvarnabhumi International Airport flagged an express cargo shipment headed to Australia.

The shipment, labelled "ENCLOSURE" and weighing 21 kilogrammes, sparked suspicions. Upon a thorough examination, the parcel contained a digital ultrasonic cleaner. X-ray scans and physical checks unearthed hidden substances, prompting a full investigation by the Investigation and Suppression Bureau and the AITF operation team.

Hidden within the ultrasonic cleaner were six foil encased packets purportedly containing green tea. However, these actually contained crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as 'Ice'), weighing about 5.6 kilogrammes when packaged. This bust equates to roughly 13.44 million baht in street value. Officials have seized the items and are actively pursuing leads to hold the culprits accountable.

Phanthong further stated, “Our department unyieldingly strives to halt drug trafficking through multi-faceted surveillance and law enforcement at points of exit, entry and transit."

In a separate incident on August 23, customs officials at the Bangkok office inspected a suspicious international package at the Bangkok Express Mail Centre, thought to originate from Germany. X-ray scans of the package showed irregularities, and this was followed by a detailed inspection in conjunction with the Investigation and Suppression Bureau, AITF, and Thailand Post.

Opening the package revealed three containers being passed off as dietary supplements. However, on closer inspection, they contained ketamine weighing about 1.307 kilograms when packaged, estimated to have a street value of around 1.3 million baht. The discovered items have been seized and forwarded to investigators for further legal action.

Phanthong highlighted the ongoing and successful anti-drug smuggling efforts by the Customs department stating that, “From October 1, 2022, to August 27 of the previous year, the department successfully managed to intervene in 130 drug-related cases worth up to 1,018.47 million baht”.

It's well known that the Thai penalty for smuggling illegal drugs to Australian is to have do several years social service as a cabinet minister and make a large amount of money in the process.

IMO the officials should have refilled the packets with salt/sugar etc. and sent them on their way to Australia, notifying the Australian Customs/Police who could then arrest the suspects when the packets were delivered!
