to organise your media collection into the correct order with all the fan art posters and info for almost every movie or Tv series   if not available then use tinymediamanger to create your own info.

 

Unfortunately the subtitle downloading is no longer free (paid version available)    VLC VLsub plugin  works  with a bit more effort  have to search every single episode vs tinymediamanger  does bulk batch downloads of subtitles  very convenient.

He could, if he wants to use apps he has to pay for, spend hours setting up, tagging, organizing, or learn what 1000 adds on are for in the case of Kodi.

100 Mbps is more than enough  wired is always preferable to wireless

They don't need any KODI add-ons.

No, I tried Plex and Kodi. I don't like Plex and Kodi is very complex, once you go down that rabbit hole be ready to lose hours of your time.

I use KODI and don't see any complexity. My media is in a simple list that I scroll through. I haven't set up any Collections or attempted any tagging. Just simple access to my media. 

@tomgreen did not ask for anything other than being able to play their media on the TV. 

All of the options that I have suggested, work with no need for extra equipment or specialised knowledge.

 

Of course there is more function the more you get into them, but you don't need to touch that side of things.

Get HDMI cable (I carry 6m one with me always) and use your TV as monitor.

- That way nobody's steeling your IP, signal etc

Easier to just copy the the files to a portable drive and play them offline in that case.

I know, Kodi makes it looks super nice, but i don't want to subordinate my storage structure to any software. I like the way it is now. I'd much rather have a simple app to connect my tv to my laptop storage.

Not that easy if you have 3000 plus files. And you'd need to buy another hard drive. I actually do that with some of my files.

That looks terrible for Kodi. If using Kodi set it up to display media artwork and synopsis for each movie or TV series.

Well, you have to add all the files to the Kodi app, if you have thousands of films it takes time. You have to set up the file sharing on the pc and add Kodi as a source. Kodi wasn't originally meant to stream from pc to tv, it was media player for the Xbox. I like it better than Plex I woudn't say it's a breeze to use or set up.
