Identification now required to make a cash deposits at Thai Banks?

After that, I was not talking about your CA DL. What we are talking about is that a Thai pink ID card or a Thai DL works in many cases. If you do not have valid ID issued in the country you reside in or visit, you must use your passport. It´s just to accept, Dude.

Ok Dude.  Do not have a Pink or a Thai DL.  So I will have to use the old passport.  Got it, "Lebowski".

Me too . Recently logged on to the Bangkok Bank web site . Had to provide D.O.B & PP number . Then up pops the face recognition system which I did not have . So off to my local BBK to have my picture taken .  It took the bank lady several attempts to take an acceptable photo . Why not use a finger print app I asked , not have was the reply  . Or is there another motive for taking a photo ?

It's just all so complicated, the idea that two other kinds of ID--Thai ID--could sometimes be used in lieu of one's passport, so obviating the need to carry it.🙂 But then, after laborious ratiocination, only to arrive at the triumphant conclusion that if one doesn't have either alternative ID, a passport must indeed suffice.

call you all lucky in Thailand.... as in my E.U. country by deposit cash money on bank account must show invoice , starting from 2900 Euro deposit.....CRS  (OECD ) controls !!, and Thailand is now active in this from 2022  after trying delay for so many years ...

very probably,   and if there isn't yet there will be one day  and they have yours already, als well as passport number , banlk account number telephone number etc etc,   all for your security and safety blah blah blah ,    probably worth a few bob to any call centers too.

The bank that is really over the top in this regard is TTb.   Bangkok bank might be the most easy going

In my case, I always have it on me, I just don’t want to take it out of the bagpack as a precaution, a few times  it so happened I forgot to close the zipper, thankfully it did not drop out nor was it hit by a rain shower. Only the paranoid survive, a whole book has been written about it. Wait until you get older lol

Yep.  I used to make cash deposits at the cash deposit machines (CDM) to pay my landlord when I first got here, but now I need to insert some form of ID like a Thai bank card before I can do any sort of deposit.  

 

What really doesn't make sense is that with Bangkok Bank, you don't need a debit card for withdrawals (if you want to avoid the annual 300 baht debit card fee) because you can just make withdrawals using the phone app.  However, you cannot make deposits using the phone app. 

 

This means you can only make cash deposits by physically seeing a bank teller, with your passport, or if you use the CDM you need another Thai bank card that can verify your identity.   It would be nice to use the app for deposits as well.  As we move into the future, we should be ditching cards, bank tellers, all customer service people, and letting computers do everything with ease.

Correct, but why do you use a CDM to pay your landlord? Pay by bank transfer is easier and no card is necessary.

Not 'easy' - its arguably risky to be carrying your passport around everywhere you go IMO....

I need to travel regularly for work, my passport has my Visa's in it...  lose a passport, and that makes life very tricky for many people.... No so much a problem if you have no need for regular travel though. 

This is the reason I use a Pink ID... to limit the reliance on a Passport so I can keep it safe at home.

 

& the Qatar thing is nuts - not just the passport, but when I've had QID I have to show that in a pub or bar (not in higher end hotel bars though - where drinks are even more extortionate).

I only paid by CDM when I first got here years ago before I set up my Thai bank accounts and PromptPay.  Now of course I use bank transfer.

I never have my passport with me, but my driver's license is accepted easily... and for every transaction... so what? I never mind showing them my ID - as you say, no big deal.

I don't usually carry my passport around but I have a file of scans of the relevant passport pages on my phone. That's usually enough, even with the bank .

Passport business started about a year ago in both Banks and post Office...

 

Silly lived here 21 years always use same banks and post office .. very few foreigners here out in the sticks, most of the staff are the same, Bank is only 2 windows mostly only 1 older Lady teller open [seen 100's of times]....... Same with Post Office send a EMS mail letter in Thailand cost 34 baht need Passport !!!

 

And NO never carry my Passport on local trips..  my Thai DL is OK but is still si9lly

I have lived in Bangkok in the same house for 34+ years. Back in 1991 this was LOS over time I can truly say not anymore,  it's just like any western country now. As for pink card I asked our local office and they gave me a list of things I would need the worse was passport front page, copy certified by Embassy, translated into Thai and certified by the TFM. same for marriage license because the one have now is to old (just like me and the Thai wife). Did they think that something was going to change after all those years? Plus two witness and could not be family. there was some other paperwork required but don't remember. I do not carry my passport with me like stated above, only for new Bank Book and IMO. Most places will take my Thai DL as ID.

Showing your ID is required almost everywhere in Thailand.
Sending a post/package need to show your id.
