In a sizzling tale of deceit, Bangkok police arrested a cheeky con artist for cooking up a scheme that left a local butcher over 1.6 million baht out of pocket. Wannipa, a 27 year old Thai woman, was collared by officers from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) after she used fake receipts to bag free pork not once, not twice, but a staggering 208 times!

The meaty scandal came to light on the CIB’s official Facebook page yesterday, sending shockwaves through the community. Wannipa’s arrest took place at a bustling shopping mall on Rama 9 Road, bringing an end to the high-stakes Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) she allegedly began back in April 2022.

According to the police report, Wannipa initially bought pork online from a butcher in Bangkok and transferred the payment via a mobile banking application. The shop required her to send the transfer receipt to the store’s LINE account before delivering the pork, and she complied.

Wannipa continued to buy pork from the shop numerous times and the butcher grew to trust her as a regular customer. However, the shop owner later became suspicious when Wannipa presented a transfer receipt but no money was deposited into the account.

The butcher reviewed previous transactions and discovered that they had never received payment from Wannipa after her first purchase.

Police reported that Wannipa used fake receipts to obtain pork 208 times, with the total value exceeding 1.6 million baht. The shop owner subsequently filed a complaint at Saimai Police Station.

Wannipa was arrested and initially agreed to repay the butcher, leading to her release on bail. However, she failed to return the money and relocated in an attempt to evade arrest. The case was then transferred to CIB officers, resulting in her arrest yesterday.

Wannipa admitted to her criminal actions, revealing that she used photo editing software to alter bank transfer receipts to obtain free products. She now faces two charges:

  • Section 14(1) of the Computer Crime Act: Importing false or distorted information into a computer system, causing damage to others. This carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 baht.
  • Section 264 of the Criminal Code: Creating counterfeit documents, with a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both.

Unfortunately, the butcher is unlikely to see the money that he is owed.

So much for banking apps.

what does that have to do with a banking app? It's just stupidity on the part of the butcher

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 208 times, well aren't I a dumbass!

The butcher or his accountant obviously didn't reconcile his bank statement with his sales records - a fundamental accounting practice.

Dollars to a pork chop he's also probably paid tax on the missing revenue.

As an aside, do non-Brits/Aussies/Kiwis understand what a porkie is? :coffee1:

Full-blooded Murikkkan here with enough British friends to understand what a porkie is, as well as "Bob's yer uncle" and "all 6's and 7's."

Thai woman and only 208 times?  Surely she must have been asleep most of that day?

or her mouth was full??

That butcher gave her his sausage to many times,   now he's paying for it.

He should have given her the chop long ago.

Why "So much for banking apps"?  If the butcher took 10 seconds and checked his app he wouldn't be out of pocket.   The situation in the OP cannot be blamed on banking apps, the banking app didn't confirm payment, he relied on the woman's LINE app.

Although I am not a supporter of using a banking app on a phone, in this case the 'app' was clearly not the problem. However, it has nothing to do with Line either - the problem is the banking system in Thailand. I have bought some things online in Thailand and the seller wanted me to send them a copy of the 'bank transaction' - which I did. When I asked later why he needed the copy to be sent, he said that some banks take a few days to transfer the money into his account - and he just does not have the time to check his incoming transactions to see if it has arrived yet. Transfers within a bank are usually done very quickly, but some inter-bank transactions take a long time.

Needs to be trotted off to the cells as she clearly cannot be trusted.

you see opportunities for these low-life all the time.. waiting in line as someone pays electronically (QR Code), the assistant is busy..the buyer just shows her a screen with a payment made and assistant says ok..it could be a screen capture from a past purchase!

Approx 7.500 baht per purchase quite a lot of pork ? Butcher must have healthy margins he can afford to lose 1.6 million before noticing mistake

Fair enough, no bail until it is repaid

Eating some animals is disgusting....but I am even less keen on eating insects. I ate a fried locust once, about what you would think, pretty bland and awful. I also ate a rat, which was totally ok, nice actually.

Is it not great to be old fashioned and just use cash for transactions.

I really don't see a youngish girl her age being able to pay 1.6 million to anybody.  Feel bad for her actually.

Unfortunately, in the very near future, using cash will be practically impossible as Thailand races to be the first country with all online monetary transactions.

I should imagine money is gone well spent on phone clothes gambling ect easy come easy go .I fear for any prospective partners she does seem to be able to talk her way out of jail ect if nice face and body she is going to sell her assets

the problem with thai banks or apps, is you never see who sent you money...

2024 guys... time to update...

eating plants is useless and dangerous   void of essential nutrients and full of useless fiber that the body DOES NOT NEED

What are the natural toxins in vegetables?
Common examples of natural toxins in food plants include lectins in beans such as green beans, red kidney beans and white kidney beans; cyanogenic glycosides in bitter apricot seed, bamboo shoots, cassava, and flaxseeds; glycoalkaloids in potatoes; 4'-methoxypyridoxine in ginkgo seeds; colchicine in fresh lily flowers

not to mention the pesticides

You do realize that any bean or seed is technically the "offspring" of a plant and like all good parents we want to protext our offspring..  and since they can't run, or bite , or fight,   hence the poisonous chemicals
