In a remarkable turn of events, police have apprehended a murder suspect who had been evading arrest for nearly two decades. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Suraphai, was captured at a hospital parking lot after his name was called over the hospital’s intercom system.

On October 19, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) announced the arrest of Suraphai, who had been wanted under a warrant issued by the Songkhla Provincial Court on June 8, 2005. He faced serious charges, including premeditated murder and illegal possession of firearms.

The case dates back to mid-2005, when a gunman fatally shot an individual at an entertainment venue on Sanhahanusorn Road in Hat Yai. Subsequent investigations revealed Suraphai as the main suspect in the murder. Following the collection of sufficient evidence, law enforcement officials issued a warrant for his arrest. However, Suraphai managed to evade capture for 19 years.

Authorities began tracking Suraphai again after learning that he was residing in Hat Yai. During the investigation, officers had to take his mother to a local hospital for medical attention after she developed a problem when being interviewed. While there, they heard the hospital announce Suraphai’s name over the loudspeaker. Recognising the name, the officers immediately called for backup to assist in the apprehension.

As the officers observed, Suraphai was about to enter a consultation room. They waited until he met with the doctor before following him to the hospital parking lot. Upon identification, they displayed their police badges and presented the arrest warrant, informing him of the charges against him. Suraphai acknowledged the allegations, confirming his identity as the wanted suspect, and admitted he had never been apprehended prior to this incident.

After the arrest, Suraphai was taken into custody and transported to the Hat Yai Police Station for further legal proceedings. During interrogation, he denied all allegations, claiming he was in the restroom at the back of the entertainment venue when the shooting occurred and had immediately fled the scene upon hearing gunshots.

Authorities have now launched the next steps in the legal process to ensure justice is served for the crime committed almost two decades ago.

Wow, what a coincidence.

Kudos to the cop for being on the ball.

After 19 years, officers remember a suspect's name?  Did these remarkable police ever think to check his mother's house in the preceding years?

So he "hid" for 19 years in the same city, undetected, that his mother lived in and the crime was committed in.

Makes you wonder why the police were questioning his mother at all after that long of time.

Perhaps trying to close out some "cold cases" before the Statute of Limitations expires ?

Note:
The Statute of Limitations for offenses punishable by (death, life imprisonment or sentences exceeding 20 years) is 20 years (in Thailand).
For offenses punishable by sentences between 7-20 years, the Limitation is 15 years.
For offenses punishable by 1-7 years, the Limitation is 10 years.

Take the case of the Red Bull heir (Vorayuth Yoovidhya).

"Wichian Klanprasert, a Thai police officer, was killed by Vorayuth Yoovidhya, grandson of billionaire Red Bull co-founder Chaleo Yoovidhya, in a hit-and-run incident in Bangkok, Thailand, on 3 September 2012.

Vorayuth, then 27, was charged with speeding, fleeing the scene of an accident, and reckless driving causing death, but has never been arrested.
The statute of limitations on the speeding charge expired in September 2013, and on the fleeing the scene of an accident charge in September 2017.

The statute of limitations for the reckless driving causing death charge will expire in 2027.
(Apparently all charges against him were dropped in July 2020.)

(No reason given for why the charges were dropped but basically he just has to wait for 3 more years and he too can return to a hero's welcome with no fear of being arrested.)

"19-Year Manhunt"; I see all those officers hunting the culprit 24/7 for the last 19 years ..........

Give the Somchais and the Yodsaks of the force a solid gold medal for their dedication, passion and resilience in executing their jobs - well done and congratulations are in order.

Makes you wonder, what these goons are doing 24/7; quite obviously those who can see are along the highways to collect "tolls" while the rest of the flock is endlessly manhunting.

If I would have been the press speaker for the police I would be very, very silent on this particular achievement 😉
