A farang whose had a drink (not totally blotto) will be better and safer than any typical Thai driver from my observations.

Good grief.  At least that's just your opinion.

I got popped in Solvey New York once on the way home from the bar. I had stopped at a light and passed out. The arrest record read that when the officer asked me if I knew why I was being stopped, my answer was: Drunk Driving? And when he asked me to walk a straight line, I told him that if I could walk, I wouldn't be driving.

I have a mate when asked to blow in the device said he couldn’t.

Because he was too drunk.

Looks like about 2 in 3 people agree with him according to the latest survey.

Many years ago the cops would knock off at midnight, everyone would drink, drive. I'd ride the bike drunk everywhere.

I remember one Songkran I was extremely drunk, riding my Yamaha Mio, passed out turning a corner and fell over, luckily I was going slow and fell into the reeds of the old fishing park at the end of Soi Regional Land. My mate was riding behind, his loud laughter woke me up.

These days cops can be set up any time, anywhere.

Bolt is cheap for me I live Pattaya Tai, I've got friends who live on the dark side (20km away), it's gets expensive for them.

Bolt for me these days.

I took Grab taxis to and from Mabprachan from Soi Diana over the weekend.  Less than 200 baht each time.  I didn't think that was expensive.

I agree it's not expensive but these guys drink everyday.

It adds up.

Gawd, look at the figures.

I didn't realise we had so many stick in the mud, goody two-shoes, party poopers here.

15% have never consumed alcohol and driven a motor vehicle in their life, can't be any Aussies in that 15%. 😂

I reckon it would be unaustralian.

In my youth did it most weekends.

Yet if you get in an accident and hurt someone then you’re in a heap of trouble. The wise thing to do is leave the problem to someone else or walk.

I never thought about it that way but I guess you must be right.

The way I was attacked on this forum for admitting it I thought it must have been more.

i thought my judgement must have been slipping but I see it just a very small minority and I am in the silent majority like I thought.

Just another case of the minority making the most noise as usual.

i have never had an accident drunk, only a few when sober.

The problem is that people who have had a drink often think they are OK to drive (which is also borne out by the results of this survey which at the time of writing runs at over 61%) - I used to be one of them. Some even claim to drive better when they've been drinking.

A few years back I saw a documentary on drink driving where they put drivers, having consumed varying qauntities of alcohol on a sort of obstacle course with various built in reaction tests. None of them was blind drunk but all of them thought they were fine to drive.  Their performance was then measured against a similar group that had not had any alcohol at all.

The results were staggering with those who'd had a drink failing miserably. The most common 'fault' was driving through a red light well after it had changed. From memory, just about all of the drinkers went through at least one red light whilst only one of the non drinkers did - and even he stopped just over the line whereas the drinkers carried on.

They were all asked how well they thought they'd done before being given the results - the drivers who'd had a drink all thought they'd done fine - until the videos were played back to them when they were sober. Conversely, some of those who had not been drinking thought they hadn't done so well when in fact even the worst of them had faired much better then their drinking counterparts.

 I found it a real eye-opener.

@ all DUI

is driving under influence (DUI) in thailand also considered a criminal offense? does that mean i can call (you) those people criminals?

by the way, when i was 16, a good friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver ...

I have driven a car when drunk and did it too many times.  Luckily, nothing ever bad happened.  That was when I was younger.  Now, I don't drink & drive at all.  If I've been out drinking, then I am using a taxi to get back home or a ride from a sober driver.

Which is why I am advocating that when drunk driving, please slow down, concentrate and follow all the road rules.

It will safe lives.

I am a big believer in Karma.

A petty criminal would be more appropriate I think.

If you want to be petty.

Those figures slipped a bit last night.

probably because all the wow sees were at home posting while the others were out socializing and driving home.

It seems to me that most people I know drink drive to some extent. Bars are full of people and nobody is ordering taxis.

After having a couple I always follow all the road rules and drive slowly, which is probably a lot safer than getting in a speeding taxi with a driver who ignores the road rules and is on his phone.

You can do much more MalcolmB....in many countries it's ZERO alcohol when driving.

Following road rules and signs works only in your imagination. How many signs and rules you missed? How many times you swerved from lane to lane? And how many times you risked other lives?

The word what I would like to use for your and all other drunk drivers I'm not allowed to use here unfortunately.

I think number 1 on your list should have read I don't drink when driving

Anyone with common sense knows not to drink alcohol if driving

I doubt most if in the UK

Would not especially with the penalties involved

While here in Thailand no one really cares if caught pay a small fine

What country has zero blood alcohol for adult fully licenced drivers?

Just because you are a Muslim and don't drink is no reason to get hostile, chill dude.

Maybe get yourself a beer and start to enjoy your life. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

It's sufficient for a simple conversation

I asked if you could read Thai, not speak some.

Can you read Thai?

Because if you can not, according to your own standards, you shouldn’t be driving even when not drunk.

Interesting, though ridiculous post.

Why you put me into the Muslim corner?

I admit I worked for WHO in Niger. That's a zero alcohol country. And yes, the driving attitudes are similar to Thailand, but without alcohol even.

I was born in Dublin.

A city well known for some booze parties now and then.

You should be thoroughly ashamed of that comment.

No he shouldn't, most Thai drivers drive as if they are under the influence of alcohol. Their driving is so bad I'm not even safe riding my pedal bike in the grounds of my local temple.
