My son bought a Fino 125 two years ago and has put 65000 km on it. His GF does Grab delivery in the evenings, so it has high mileage.

After riding it for 5 minutes, it starts to splutter when applying throttle and then stops.

A small smell of burning.

I thought it was out of coolant, but apparently it doesn't use any coolant. The closest repair guy came to it and topped it up with oil, saying that was the issue.

Rode it maybe 2 or 3 km and it started losing power and spluttering again, but didn't cutout when going easy on the throttle, and the burning smell wasn't noticeable.

It seems to happen when it gets hot, after 5 minutes or so of riding.

Obviously will take it for a service, but they will just change the oil and oil filter, spark plug, brake pads and brake fluid, and pump up the tires without using a gauge.

Any ideas on what the culprit could be?

TIA.

My first thought was contaminated fuel, but the burning smell complicates things.

I'd contact the manufacturers. I had a problem with a camera that the repair guys couldn't fix, but the manufacturers came up with a solution a day after I e mailed them.

The bike is 2 years old, most people never change it.

2 years old with 65k km. That's a lot of road for a small engine.

And it does sound like fuel problem. Might be the fuel hose (burning smell might suggest that)

I suspect it ran out of oil causing damage to the piston, valves and bearings...a shade tree mechanic can "fix" it  for 3000 +++ baht

depending on the damage found when the engine is opened...

?

Wouldn't it be smoking then

Have the valves ever been checked properly?

Probably not, the shops doesn't even have a feeler gauge to check .

It doesn't have a fuel filter.

It's carb, not FI.

Depends on the damage/extent.

The "repair guy" topping up the oil

leads me to suspect..it has at some time run low or completely out of oil

they can actually run for quite a while with "no" oil before total destruction.

Its Bogging, needs a Carb clean. The burning smell prob a separate issue. Nothing to do with oil...

Probably easier to just get a new carb, then cleaning up one with 65km on it.

How much does an OEM carb cost for a 2022 Fino 125?

What color is the spark plug and what is the gap? renew it, if it is black burning oil, or running rich, rings, piston worn, air filter?

White plug running weak, blocked carb, leak/lose, in/on, inlet manifold, if it is a rubber one?.

Could be fuel filter ,that Lazada post said the fuel filter is inside the fuel tank,

Burning smell drive belt? you will know if it is drivebelt, you can hear a noise from that area., or oil leaking from the engine on to a hot surface, normally the exhaust, head gasket?

Ask around for a good repair shop, they are out they, just got to find one.

IMO 65,000 km is high mileage.

I would be checking if the spark plug was oiling up, due to piston/cylinder wear.

Changing the oil and spark plug won't fix it, if that is the case.

A compression check might be worth doing.

.A compression check might be worth doing.

Most Thai shops don't really do compression test.

Easy, quick to pull cylinder,

then maybe a rebore, change piston & rings,  cheap.

But yes. first check the air filter, plug and rebuild carb..

Get it to an proper mechanic, instead of cheap know <deleted> locals

He took it to an official dealership.

They said the airfilter was dirty and blocking the flow.

The changed the airfilter, oil filter, oil, and new brake pads and fluid. 1500 baht.

He drove it away and 5 minutes the same thing happened again, but with no burning smell. Just spluttering and stopping when the engine is warm.

I have told him to get the carb cleaned, sparkplug replaced, and a new fuel filter, if it has one.

Another ideas are welcome.

We are reluctant to take it back to the same dealership as we previously had an older scooter with issues, we took it to a main dealer, after declaring what the problem was they did it all for around 8000 baht.

The problem wasn't fixed.

We took it back to them.

They lost face.

They put silicone into the engine as sabotage.

Sounds to me if the engin is hot and stops it is a fule problem, get the carb

cleaned .by using a air line, and,if they can, check the float hight ,wrong float hight will stave the engine of fule. As I said before, what color is the plug.

No idea. But I've told him to get a new spark plug and get the carb cleaned.

Thanks for your input and advise.

I had similar problem on a 65k km Suzuki Hayatte, they checked everything at Suzuki dealer in Phuket town and finally said engine has to be opened.

They opened, change piston rings and pin, and some other small washers and cleaned valves, I guess adjusted valves too, it was as good as new after, all included was 1600 baht (some 7 or 8 years ago).

But I would not trust Honda dealers, never had good experience with them, many I came across were not reliable or fair on price...! No experience with Yamaha dealers...

Thanks.

The dealership says that it is FI.

The first mechanic says that it has a carb.

The official dealership didn't think of changing the fuel filter, only the air filter.

This is what we're dealing with. 🙄

I copy and pasted the Thai for fuel filter and spark plug and told his GF to take it back and get these changed for new ones.

The thing with mechanics here is they think they are fantastic, will declare what it is without investigating, change parts that aren't the problem, then when it's brought back again they lose face and want to sabotage it. 🙄

Sounds like your fuel pump may not be up to snuff. When cold, then engine is still running rich. When it's warm, it drops to a normal fuel/air mix and gets starved at high rpms.

I read this on google and it makes sense.

If the new fuel filter and new spark plug doesn't fix the issue, I guess a new fuel pump is next?

From my experience as aircraft mechanic, and racing  dirt bikes, the first step is start with the basics

1, inspect the spark plug, it will give you excellent starting point, Compare the plug with the many charts on the web.

2, check compression,  place your thumb over the spark plug hole and crank the engine. It should try and push your thumb off the hole.

3, check spark, inset the spark plug into the plug wire, and touch the plug to the engine, and crank the engine,

A, cold engine should be blue\white spark

B, warm engine, same color.

If the spark is weak, or a yellow color, points to a ignition issue , CDI, spark plug wire, coil

4, inspect and if needed change both air, and fuel filter

5, check intake system for air leaks

with the engine running, spray carb cleaner over the engine. If the engine speeds up, you have air leak.

6 , if fuel injected, remove the injector. crank the engine, a fine mist should spray out

if carb, while the engine is hot, and running spray carb cleaner into the air filter , if the engine runs better, clean the carb.

The above steps will point in the right direction to troubleshoot the issue.

 On the burnt smell,

First step is clean the engine, and inspect for any leaking gaskets , especially near the exhaust system.

Without seeing it or the plug, sounds like a ignition issue , coil, cdi , stator gets warm, and misfires

Ignore any of the posts that say "Clean the carbs". The Yamaha Fino has been fuel injected for the past 10 years.
