Vertigo

I get bouts of dizzy head and vertigo ,it’s scary as makes me feel so bad I can only collapse in a chair and wait till it passes,usually half an hour ,don’t know why but I am a strike survivor so could be that, it worry's me about driving . But no idea of cures…I can’t lie down ,have to keep upright in a chair

Small crystals can form in the inner ear and cause severe dizzy spells.  The Epley Manoeuvre (special head movements) can help, there's lots of YouTube videos on how to do it.

 

I take Merislon if the Epley doesn’t work, and this helps but makes me feel drowsy.

 

But there's many causes of vertigo, so recommend you see a Doc.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV):

 

 

This is the most common cause of vertigo, particularly when triggered by changes in head position, such as lying down or rolling over in bed.

It occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) in the inner ear become dislodged and enter the semicircular canals, which are responsible for detecting head movement. This disrupts the sense of balance and causes vertigo.  

 

Are you on any blood pressure medications? What is your BP normally? Do you take Viagra?

 

See a doctor before something worse happens, such as a fall with a broken hip.

Look up the description for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and see if it matches your symptoms.  @Kinnock gave some details about it.  There are several different flavors of the problem depending on what part of the inner ear the small crystals occupy.  It is called 'Positional' because certain head movements and directions of head tilt will cause the 'Paroxysmal Vertigo' sensations. 

 

There is no forever cure for it but as Kinnock mentioned there is a specific serious of head motions that will often move the crystals in the inner ear to an area where they no longer cause vertigo.  Look on YouTube for the Epley maneuver or search for BPPV.

 

My wife suffers from it.  In her case the vertigo occurs if she is not careful when she tilts her head forward and downwards.  If she quickly stops the movement at the first sensation she is often OK after a few minutes of sitting still and looking straight ahead and focusing far away.

I noticed this happening to me when ever I walk , not dissy , but light headed! Also happens in bed if I move my head quickly.The left side of my 

neck has been sore for a year, I thought it might be arthritis.

I went to the dr , he prescribed Betahistine 3x daily . Two weeks later,No improvement!

I have BPPV as mentioned above, from Covid, a long covid symptom. The Epley maneuver did nothing for me but i mostly ignore the symptoms, doesn't effect my life at all

A competent ENT will identify the exact type of BPPV you have.  The Epley is not the correct treatment for some forms of BPPV.

Your symptoms do not match well with those of BPPV.  Vertigo is extreme dizziness.  Sometimes to the point of vomiting.
