describing how the practice, once hidden, has now become a significant income source for young people struggling to make ends meet.

This is nothing new.

For a couple of decades now I have been going into the 7eleven on Soi Kophai, early mornings, around 3, 4, 5am.

After work the agogo girls with their Thai boyfriends paying for their beers and cigarettes after she been shagging and blowing the many foreigners through the night.

Some things must be true for a Nikah mut'ah:

  • The bride must not be married to anyone else at the time
  • If she has never been married, her legal guardian must agree
  • She must be a Muslim, or among the People of the Book (which means Christians, Jews, and Muslims, mostly)
  • After the contract ends, she must not have sex with anyone for some time. This is usually three months. This is so people will know that the father of any children she has if she becomes pregnant was her husband.

What about rental Thai rules?

he sends her US$7,000 per month to 'keep' her and the kid. (The kid is looking at attending Harvard in the next few years).

I hope he has a scholarship $7K a month will not pay for his books.

A few years ago I used to go to beer garden BK pick a nice girl and take her for a holiday, no bar fines and usually 1000 bhat a day  ,and have a lovely time, someone said it's open again, is that true? I'm past that now and married

That option is still available - especially on the internet.

But the price has gone up a tad.

I am a widower and I cannot be Rsed to train a new wife.

Always nice to have a bit of company when on holiday.

I'm not at all shocked.

What does shock me is all the billionaires marrying second hand wives.

Jeff Bezos with all his money finds himself a 50yo woman .......... why?

On the other hand,

Leonardo DiCaprio gets it right by trading in his used 25yos for new 18yos every few years.

Cause you're not as you said many times you have one yourself.

Age old tradition with a new trendy name

Nothing trendy about the name. It nothing more than the ignorance of some to put them all alongside rent boys.

There is no dispute that Thailand has, like every other country, many involved in prostitution, but there is also a great number of girls just trying to escape poverty. A foreign husband is a fairly common way out and bar scene was little more than the origin of  "dating apps", now widely used in the west.

In the UK, Wetherspoons have a "try before you buy" arrangement on real ale, nothing wrong with tourists taking a similar approach.

Would a woman who could be making a decent wage at an office job be doing it, in preference?

Women are always looking for a better life to upgrade to ,be it by marriage or social arrangement. Having a legal marriage is just more ironclad . There are always a trade off of benefits both ways. To each their preferences so long as nobody is hurt in the relationship. Win win is the way to go.

Nothing new here, and nothing will change. Why should it? I stopped judging others years ago. As long as there is a need, whether sexual, companionship, or both, everything remains status quo. Do we really have a right to judge others based on how they make this happen?  Where adults make their own adult decisions. Sometimes, it's a business deal; other times, it's an emotional need, so what!

Thais would treat it as karma. It is what it is.

Rent v Buy?

Just some of the advantages of renting that I have discovered:

With a rental you can break the contract cheaply.

With a rental you can always get the latest product

If you have a problem with a rental then it is easy to rent a different item.

A rental contract can be as long or as short as you want.

In the long run, renting is far cheaper than buying.

I shall always rent.  I do not intend to ever buy a car.

When you buy, you owned that product. I would say that marriages are also rentals because you do not own the product but instead had a social contract with the other party. A divorce is a broken social contract .

my now Thai Wife of several years had a hair salon in Bangkok for a few years before we met and I lured her to join me in Chiang Mai. We consider ourselves quite fortunate to have found each other but after five years together, she said she did not want to be a "rented wife". This I could appreciate and although I was happy with our unmarried state, I agreed. We have continued to be quite happy without any issues.

Long term unmarried relationship can work only if the lady want to be childless and lonely in their old age which I find most Thais are not agreeable with. After a fruitful long companionship, she would want to move on to something more than the current status quo. That is how I got married to my current wife after 15 years of companionship.

For maximum satisfaction and minimum grief, I have only two rules when it comes to renting wives in Thailand:

1 - Always stick to a one-hour time limit on all rentals.
2 - Always follow rule number one.

Not marrying a lady for an emotional bonding, any physical communion is just soulless union. After hundreds of encounters, it can also make you morph into a soulless individual in this world.

From now on im only renting, for the rest of my life. The things you own always end up owning you

That would be accountability and reciprocally at work.
