I was absolutely mortified at what I witnessed yesterday.

Yesterday, on the way home from the pub (in a taxi), I witnessed a crash between a motorbike and a car. Traffic was backed up for a few minutes and when It was my turn to pass I saw the driver of the bike pick up a baby girl that had been with him on his scooter when it crashed - with no bleeding helmet!

Thankfully the girl was still alive but was crying her eyes out and her leg was covered in blood.

That could easily have been her head.....

What is wrong with these people that they are so irresponsible as to not put a helmet on their child's head before driving the bike?

Are they lacking in education, awareness or are they just too damn lazy to do it?

They can afford the bike, so why not a child's helmet from Tesco?

I see the same thing day in day out, parents driving bikes at high speed with kids on the front and no crash helmet...

Will the Thai's ever learn?

As with many things, it starts with enforcement, and there rarely is any.

it's beyond belief mate.

Taxi driver looked at me the same way when I buckled up yesterday.

Some taxi's don't even have the seat buckle available in the back seats!

Can't argue with that, Charlie.

But I also think it goes beyond just enforcement of the law.

I think there is a cultural element to it which I am still trying to figure out..

See this all the time like 2 of these old grannies on a <deleted>ty old manual bike, driving in S shapes as if they are drunk, with a 1 year old baby in between of them, and then they even raise it up as if it is cool for the baby to have the best view, like ready to launch.

Same with the cars which usually are pick up trucks, right in the back or in the middle without seat belts... Well that's Thailand, I think i have gotten grey hair from it expecting the worst with my son each time he goes to the family etc during his young years.

Even today it is still my main thing I always fear, when he goes out, traffic is the devil here.

I think you mean riding? Anyway, this is only one thing: what about signalling??? Licenses, insurance, mand aintenance Thais are all "mai pen rai" until something happens.

I see children on scooters without helmets so often the sight is no longer remarkable.

I do wonder at a risk assessment thought process, which seems to make wearing face masks on a scooter a better preventative measure than a helmet.

What would a photo do for you exactly?

Do you like to see crash victims covered in blood?

Is that your thing?

Easy to understand.

Good karma = the amulet worked.

Bad karma = gonna gitcha anyway.

Kid damaged?  Just make a new one!.

Mass produced by unskilled labor.

This attitude needs to change.

I know I am not the one to initiate such a change, but I can do my bit.

I may shake my head in sympathy and disbelief, but the reality is that it's none of my business.   Unless they do something that puts my life at risk.

I'm not one of those who would leave the nanny state, and impose the nanny culture on them.

Total lack of education......SIL just had a kid....wife picked them up from hospital...two our drive.....she travelled in the front of the car with the baby on her lap.....WT....??

BUT.....in the 60's I would travel the same way ......two seater sports car, me and my mum squeezed into the front passenger seat and we never gave it a second thought.

Nah mate. Being a teller of tall tales is alright in itself, but sadly you tell the same tale every time. You really have to get a life, best done by starting over. You are not a success here.

A rather daft reply if you are questioning the point made that few people are wearing helmets on motorcycles here - all you need to do is open your eyes to see this issue.

I know I am not the one to initiate such a change, but I can do my bit.

I was cycling across southern China, out in the rice terraces, a family with a 4-yr old on a motorcycle ran into a ditch in front of me, low speed, nothing broken.

I helped dad pull the bike back on the road, used my first aid kit to clean them up.

Dad offered to pay me.  I was going to decline at first, but decided to charge him 50 RMB.  (~250 baht).

Before the drove off, I asked them to do me a favor.  Gave the 50 to mom and had her promise to buy a kiddie helmet for the kidlet.

A rather daft devoid of sense response, trying to correlate my post that cites Bob’s aka Colin imaginary experiences with helmets? How did you ever come up with that silly tangent?
