It's a given that despite hereditary evidence of issues due to proliferation of heirs with first cousins known to most societies was known but largely ignored in the interest of keeping the rule of power within "The Family".

Over time and (de) generations "suitable" partners were sought from further afield.

Problematic in even that attempt has been that the eligible pool has also contained proliferate spawn contaminated by history.

Prince Philip of Greece was a distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth as and both were descendants of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert .

Relevance to the topic is that when the upper echelon of various societies including Royals consider it appropriate to interbreed any criticism of any cultural society that does same is questionable but any educated move away from the adopted acceptance should be considered healthy IMO.

How many people are even aware of who their great-great-great grandparents were?

You mean what they 'did' consider it being appropriate to interbreed, those days are long gone if you care to check the history. The practice in Pakistani and Middle Eastern is still happening, Pakistan around 50-60% marrying first cousins, and its still going on in the Pakistani community in the UK, the main result apparently is Autism and Cerbal Palsey.

Since its the year 2024 and the law hasn’t been changed to ban first cousin marriage, those days have definitely not gone and clearly nobody saw fit to see the back of them in any of the years prior to 2024.
