Are we really better than the Russians, Indians, Arabs and Chinese in the eyes of Thais?

But no-one else can!   555

Do you not have regional accents in Oz, like every other country, take USA for example.

I don't think so. Someone from Queensland can understand a West Australian.

The broad ocker accent is more a socio-economic attribute, not regional. My accent is less ocker, due to schooling and travel.

So who's accent would be regarded as 'standard ocker'?  Or should I say The King's Ocker?  555

The deputy PM of UK, Angela Rayner, is from way up North near Manchester, yet Kier Starmer, and most of the nation, can  understand what she says.

Check equestrian and bicycling events, your research is faulty.

Christopher Burton won a Silver in the Equestrian for Australia in Paris 2024 .

Australia didn't won a gold in Equestrian .

Australia only won 2 Gold medals that wasn't in the water or on wheels .

Apart from the two , all Australian  Gold medals came in water sports or bicycles/skateboards

Prejudice sure rears it's ugly head here, and that shows inferiority as a person.

+1...

It’s common for sweeping generalisations to emerge, often fuelled by media attention. Ironically, those who get caught up in such generalisations tend to voice them most vocally.

While I find it frustrating to be unfairly grouped with others of my nationality who behave poorly, I also recognise the absurdity of such broad judgments. Any reasonable person can easily distinguish the actions of a minority from the decency of the majority.

This principle applies broadly to stereotypes and generalizations. Judging an entire nation based on the actions of a few is not only shortsighted but also fundamentally flawed.

That said, stereotypes and generalisations don’t emerge out of nowhere; they often stem from a grain of truth or a recurring pattern.

Take, for example, the stereotype of Russians in Phuket. While it exists for a reason, it’s far from an accurate depiction of all Russians, many are, in fact, very pleasant, especially once you get to know them. Similarly, stereotypes about Brits and Australians suggest a propensity for rowdy behavior, yet I personally know none who start fights in bars or behave poorly in public. The same applies to Americans; though often labeled as loud or brash, most I’ve encountered are quiet and reserved.

Ultimately, while stereotypes and generalisations may have roots in reality, the most accurate generalisation is this: generalisations are nearly always flawed.

If one measures the number of medals Australia won per million population, it's ahead of any other nation.

I beg to differ in terms of superiority, because some nations have different attributes. The Kenyans and Ethiopians have long been famous in events of long distance running, spanning decades. Just like Russia and the East Europeans dominated gymnastics, although that was more nurture than nature.

I have always admired the Thais for their physical flexibility and family cohesion. I don't admire their driving skills.

I don't think of myself as better than others, although some on this forum may disagree.

But the question isn't really about medals or superiority in sports, which is still individual or team based, at least for a particular year. It's about are we really better in the eyes of Thais. This means little , as prejudice and money are involved, and that throws logic out the window anyway. Some locals hate all foreigners. Some tolerate them, and some like them, besides the actions of a few which makes a certain nationality look bad to some who  are plainly close minded. You can't measure medals won per million because these are individuals that are the best (known) in a particular sport. Most of the population cannot win medals in anything anyway, so the amount of people doesn't matter. Again, I'm American but fully understand the US is all countries together, and not a separate entity like Germany, Spain, France etc.

To be at the top of their profession, surgeons need to have the acronyms FRCS, FRACS. after their names. FRCS stands for Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, FRACS stands for Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

FRCS is the first qualification a surgeon gets, followed by FRACS. That's because the second qualification is tougher to obtain, and puts the surgeon in elite company.

The atomic absorption spectrometer was invented and developed in Australia, although I must admit it was an immigrant Brit, Sir Alan Walsh, who was responsible.

The black box present on all passenger aircraft was invented by the Australian scientist David Warren.

I am disappointed you forgot one of our big cultural contributions, Sir Les Patterson.

The topic is about foreigners in the eyes of Thai.

And like it or not but the "working girls" very often exclude Indian man for their behavior/treatment of women.

Certainly has changed the past 2 years or so.  Yes, the old "I not go with man India" use to be their comment.  Now, there are many Thai girls in Pattaya with Indian males.  In fact, I probably see more India then any others accompanied with Thai lady.  Just walk around Central mall in the afternoon they are everywhere.

Jeez three pages of total nonsense

We're all human, I can disagree with the views and lifestyle of someone from my own country, but I don't think they are lessor, inferior to me.

The English/Aussie thing, well you got some issues which deserve therapy

The English - Aussie thing IME has always been good-humoured, I don't know why that would need therapy.

This is a good "fly on the wall" thread to observe. That being said......

In the internet age what seems clear is that nobody likes anybody, and racism is hard wired into our genes. Individually, we might get along, but the "other" is most always worse.

A few comments on the comments:

One is that Japanese are better behaved and refrain from "walking around with floozies on their arm". Well, one reason is they have their own street---Thaniya St in Bangkok". On visits to Thailand before I bought a business and moved here, I often stayed in the Silom/Saladaeng area. At breakfast, especially during the Golden Week holidays, dozens of Japanese men would come down to breakfast with their previous evenings' partner. The men would chat among themselves, as would all the young Thai women, and then all would go their separate ways---the women home, the Japanese men to the golf course. One of the reasons this may have changed is because the Japanese economy is in the doldrums and the yen trading near its weakest level in decades.

Then there is a comment on "floozies", a reference to Thai women who work in the entertainment industry. Personally, I do not feel superior to those women, as I did not grow up as they did. Whatever their job, I have no moral superiority to them, and I would never use a disparaging term to describe them, such as floozy, slut, whore, etc. Yes, "your" wife or girlfriend is a good girl, and at worst was a "cashier". Good for her. That does not make her superior, nor you. And no, I don't have a girlfriend who works in the trade. They have more taste than to choose me.

Most of us goal seek when we wish to feel superior. We're not like the drunk Russian who decides to dance shirtless on an agogo stage. We're not the Brit who runs naked through the streets of Pattaya. We're not the tatted Aussie who thinks it's okay to walk shirtless through the streets of a major cosmopolitan city. We're not the American caught with an underage girl in his hotel room.

Whom do the Thais prefer? Maybe if I'm an Administrator at Bumrungrad Hospital, it's Arabs. Maybe if I own agogos, it's young Koreans or multi millionaire Western expats. If I own a pub in a major tourist zone, it's Brits with a serious drinking problem. If I'm a landlord on Walking Street in Pattaya, it's French men. Maybe if I own a seafood grill, it's Chinese. Maybe if I'm an Indian watch seller, it's "Bob", looking for another "Roleks" or "P R J".

Personally, all I know is I am luckier than most everyone, and I had nothing to do with it. Accident of birth. I thus feel a responsibility to behave, act polite, dress well, keep my voice low, accept the inevitable difference of opinion or misunderstanding that might possibly result from cross cultural contact, and just "be nice".  There but for the grace of Zeus go I, as a "floozy" or dancing drunk Russian or shirtless Aussie or eternally angry and status-seeking "Bob".

My couple of months camping out on Soi 11 definitely softened me towards Indians and Arabs. They are low key partiers who are really grateful to be free from their cultural straight jackets.

Ultimately, Soi 11 was not for me as a permanent living arrangement -despite jaw-dropping restaurant options.

But I can't think of anywhere else on earth where Norwegians toke up with Bahrainians. Cheap Charlie's may be gone, but it's still very much an intercultural crossroads and I hope that never changes.

What makes you think that we're white?   How could you "notice" that?

Well, if it gets into a contest of who invented the most, you guys are well behind.

I know much of your cultural contributions, you are very famous for your transvestites/drag queens such as Dame Edna Everage, Art Simone and not forgetting Priscilla Queen of the Desert, all upstanding males in your country.

I think you will find most of the UK's inventive streak originates in Scotland. Australia punches well above its weight in medical research.

I had to Google Art Simone, which shows how much I follow the transvestite culture.

You do have some interesting cultural aberrations in your murderers. We are amateurs in comparison.

I wonder where he got the inspiration for his smash hit 'Two Little Boys'?
