I don't drink.

I don't go to bars ,I like to go to bookshops like Canterbury tales

I like to be in the city ,I don't like trees

I once went into the countryside bush of  Australia and had nightmares the trees were talking to me

Most likely the ghosts of the trees that were chopped down to make the pages in the books you like.  LOL

No matter op is real or not, the question is valid.

20k living cost is doable, and can be a good life compared to anywhere in thenworld, if the person do not drink, cooking home, enjoy living alone, and also have savings and can afford insurance, or at least have enough founds to cover himself if he has an accident, stroke, hearth attack or whatever could happen that is possible to regain a quality life after.

Anyway, what I think and feel about many who lives on a strict budget, or anyone who spends what they have month by month, the going the live as good that they can afford, and if something happens, that's it.

But when <deleted> happens, what then? Thinking about it, as a real thing, but when disaster happens, and it will most likely at one point, you better have good friends who stick to you and support you. Again, seen it several times with biker friends who collects money for those who have lived a reckless life, and ended up in a crisis.

If you have no one, you can imagine how that will be.

It depends if you have Private health insurance, I pay $210 per month for HCF medical insurance

I still had to pay a "gap" fee to the specialist but got in quicker because I was seeing him in his private rooms as opposed to the public hospitals clinic

I saw 2 specialist this year at private hospital within a week,St Vincent private hospital as opposed to St Vincents public hospital

Is 20 kms out of the center of CM cheaper than in the farang areas of Pattaya? I would say almost certainly yes.

That may be true but you cannot take a clean breath in Chiang Mai for about 6-7 months of the year buddy.

Cheers

You need to face up to reality and realise you cannot afford to retire and live in Thailand .

You would need at at least 40 000 Baht a month to live in Thailand as a newbie

40,000 baht a month !!  ....that's more than a Aussie old age pensioners live on IN Australia .

If they can live on 20,000 baht a month in Australia after housing that's $950 AUD ,then I'm sure you can in Asia

Can you live on 20k, I have worked out I will only have 20,000 baht a month to live on

Trat town, the jumping off point for Koh Chang, easy peasy.

Lots of cheap local food and room rents are cheap.

You can always pretend to go to Koh Chang with the hi-so's and Russians.

Lovely area, and maybe the rain there gives a brief relief from the heat and pollution.

but over time other issues/"wants"/needs emerge which will likely make a 20K budget constraining, especially as you get older and may have more medical expenses.

.... and that's when you budget enough $$ to fly back to Canada (or Oz, or UK, or wherever) and sign up for the MAID programme: Medical Assistance in Dying.  Legal euthanasia buddy.

So let's face it....in reality you can live in 20k per month in Asia , particularly Pattaya

Aussie & UK pensioners do it in Australia and UK every month even for far less ,so if you can do it Australia why not Thailand or Vietnam?

Aren't things cheaper there???

Healt insurance can be quite expensive depending of age and level of coverage. If your health is good – I would say: That is a must for a 20k baht budget – and you can settle with public hospital service, you might find a health insurance in the level around 3,000 baht to 4,000 baht per month.

Health insurance companies can SUCK it.

I'll rather take the death shot than give those phricks my cash buddy.

Cheers

I'm seeing this Da Nang place a a alternative

Dont even think about Vietnam buddy.  No good visa. And it's communist, great friend to China.

Plus - Danang is nothing but South Korean and Chinese package tourists and coaches that lean on the klaxon all day. Annoying as hell buddy.

I pay $210 per month in Australia for private health insurance just so I don't end up in a waiting list in a Public hospital

I must check it out

Of course with the death of the biggest Duamagette YouTuber last week it may not get as much atreyas the past.

Many have gone and said it failed to live up to expectations

I have been to the Philippines several times and do not find things cheap as other Asian Countries eg hotels ,Condo rents , grocery etc

The Condo rents are far more than Thailand

I doubt you could live in 20,000 Thai baht in Cebu for instance

Sure, there isn’t as much choice but general basics for day to day stuff is much less expensive.

I agree with that, but remember that VN is a communist country closely aligned with their idol, China and Mr Xi.

Visa policy can change in a heartbeat. Are you OK with walking the tightrope sans net?  One has to consider these.

Also, you're overlooking the daily noise pollution from the S.Korean and Chinese package tour coaches (dozens, if not hundreds every  day) that love to lean on their klaxons. That gets old really quickly.

That said, the beach can be lovely (when no plastic pollution has spoiled it) and the climate is ..... a nice contrast to much of SE Asia.

And yeah ..... baguettes and banh mi are THE BEST.

Cheers buddy

depends how much you spend on food.

if you eat too much low quality food, you will end up paying more medical bills later on.

I don't believe that ,but that's another topic

Obviously I agree with you if it's alcohol

But eating chocolate is ok along with a good diet

I eat ice cream a few times a week too

I sure could not my golf budget is twice that.  That is 700 b a day lots of poor British do it with their lousy frozen pensions, so I guess it is possible.

Come and give it a try for a month.  If you get hungry, they throw a lot of food waste here I am sure the garbage cans at the malls are a gold mine.

This topic comes around more often than the 'what do you dislike about Thailand' tat, and you ALWAYS without fail get the obligatory boomer response... my cat couldn't live on less blah blah. 20k is easily doable, though if you're not very worldly, have to pay for tarts, eat like a glutton and can't curtail your drinking, you could never do it.

Lets cut to the chase here.......If your NOT  paying monthly rent......AND you dont run the air con too much......AND you cook at home most of the time......You can live quite well off 20,000 a month......100%

Trust me I am a card carrying cheap charlie I know....

I went from about 100k for the first 10 years here but I bet I could do 35k now.  I have no utility or water bills(50-150 baht) because of solar and water on the property.  Cars and home paid for and live a simple but satisfying life.

How can you live quite well off 20K? My wife cooks all our meals and I think she probably buys more than her share of the food with her own cash (we have separate savings ). I spend about 10-12k on food(normal food but a lot of protein )from the market or grocery stores. That would leave 8k for everything else which would be near impossible on an on going basis.

I truly respect your frugal life.  Are you truly happy and don't feel you need a little more money?
