Food does not need to be expensive....

How many of those pre-made Thai food dishes would you need to eat to reach your protein needs.  You go to the gym and are aging (IMO- need more protein).  I need at least 125g of protein a day and that would be expensive if using those 60 baht dishes at the family mart that might have 20 grams of protein.    For 50 baht at the local market I can buy enough meat to meet my protein needs.

It's overrated how much protein you need 

I was drinking about 5 glasses a dayv of protein powder with milk like a milkshake 

Not only did my weight balloon but I had flatulence and kidney pain 

Now I don't even buy much protein powder ,and I ho to the gym about 4 times a week,not everyday like I used to 

I drink Creatine everyday

I have been to the Philippines several times and do not find things cheap as other Asian Countries eg hotels ,Condo rents , grocery etc 

The Condo rents are far more than Thailand 

I doubt you could live in 20,000 Thai baht in Cebu for instance 

Many also says it is a great place to retire, so what many says, doesnt mean much really. 

 

I say Pattaya is a deleted place to retire, and many disagree with me, and also many agree with me. Right?

Visa policy can change in a heartbeat. Are you OK with walking the tightrope sans net?  One has to consider these.

 

Also, you're overlooking the daily noise pollution from the S.Korean and Chinese package tour coaches (dozens, if not hundreds every  day) that love to lean on their klaxons. That gets old really quickly.

 

That said, the beach can be lovely (when no plastic pollution has spoiled it) and the climate is ..... a nice contrast to much of SE Asia.

 

And yeah ..... baguettes and banh mi are THE BEST.

I did a little looking into the visa situation.  If done through an agency, the DN visa (where one officially needs sponsorship) can be done without said sponsorship.  Probably in a way that isn’t much different than how people in Thailand nurse an agent to get around the financial requirements for the “retirement” visa.  One Vietnam visa website specifically addresses this in their FAQ section.

Yes, the visa laws can change in a heartbeat although I could see them becoming more open to retirees in the future with an official retiree visa which isn’t currently available…officially.  
 

However, Thailands visa laws can also change in a heartbeat as can their worldwide income taxation structure and as they treat capital gains (from non SET listed companies) like income rather than the way the US taxes them (0%….or 15% up to a very high limit), that is a dealbreaker (for me).

 

With regards to their relationship with China, it appears (to me) that Thailand has a similar relationship with China.  I see more Chinese tourists in Thailand than I am currently seeing here in Vietnam although I have seen a few of the busses that you mention.  It is monsoon season currently so there aren’t that many tourists in general.

 

The honking of horns is definitely an issue here in general but not nearly as bad as Hanoi in the Hoan Kiem area.

 

So far, I haven’t seen any pollution on the beach (My Khe) and much less than I would see in Thailand in general scattered about the city.

 

Let’s see what the future holds.

Huahin during low season had piles of rubbish everywhere.  Can’t even imagine what the other beaches were like.

 

Vietnam works for me.

Why is that? Haven’t you ever had Mexican food? They put cheese on beans on a lot of dishes. Peanut is a legumes, a can of peanut butter is just a can of refried beans.

    As another poster said, time to find another pool boy.  Our pool boy cleans and maintains our salt water pool 3 times a week for 1500 baht a month.  When we are away he also waters the garden.  Yes, we have a gem.

I agree about Hanoi.   I had to deal with the “shoe repair” guy scam on the street, an angry Samlor tour guide who pedaled my gf and I around the lake and then demanded double payment at the end even after a price was agreed upon, the cigarette lighter sellers who would follow you down the street with their basket of zippos and won’t take no for an answer so you just have to pretend they are invisible.
