You seem confused yourself.   There is not ONE continent called America.  There is North or South America.  The US is in N. America and I’m pretty sure there are not 34 nations there?

My wife's family literally came from China on the boat. They are Chinese. Her parents were granted Thai citizenship through some agreement in the 50's, I'm not sure.

There are sub-divisions in North America which cause confusion perhaps because those from the USA think Canada and the USA is North America.

- North America (Mainland Core - USA Canada, Mexico),

- Central America

- The Caribbean

- Bermuda

- Greenland is a confusing one (Geographically its in North America... Politically associated with Europe)

 

In much the same way Europe has its subdivisions.

- Northern Europe

In my Skool years I can recall North, Central and South America. Which you have highlighted above.

 

Post Skool and pre internet days I lived and worked in one of those ' Central American ' Countries. The Postal address contained the words " Central America '

 

In post internet days, having frequently travelled the caribbean islands, over a period of a decade, I have never heard of them being referred to as North America, only ever the Caribbean / Caribbean Islands ( Cannot speak for Cuba, never got there )

 

So it is not just those from the USA that think North America consists of Canada, the US, and a pimple called Mexico. This was also my understanding and Central America and theCaribbean Island were 2 entities seperate from North Amerca.

 

To put in a European context, the Americas were subdivided into North, Central, South and the Caribbean Islands.

 

And until I read your post earlier, I was still of that belief

You are not incorrect - The North American Continent is subdivided...     but those countries within those Subdivisions are still in North America. 

 

Regarding postal addresses - I can't speak for postal addresses in places such as Costa Rica, however, everywhere else I have travelled and work, only the 'Country' has been necessary when writing an address, not the continent or sub-division of continent - but I can see how local preferences may influence that.

That just comes down to education, assumption, individual understanding etc...   there's never been any reason to question that in the past - I'd guess that this same 'assumption' is made by many... But Central America & The Caribbean are part of the North American continent.

 

Oceana and Australasia is another which throws out a curve ball for many...  As does Greenland...

The 425k "compensation" she got they just added it to her salary.

 

Bad because as I just found out compensation in Thailand is not taxable and if they paid her out correctly she would be getting a big refund.

 

In my opinion this is actually great news because now she can sue them for REAL compensation.

You are wrong. Severance pay is taxable but there is a deductible. She needs to do a tax declaration before april-1 and if she paid too much tax the tax office will give her that money back.

Go sue them, waisted money on a lawyer.
