I think the answer is both mindset and circumstances are important.
Mind over matter?,
Meh, somethings you can't overcome with will power and effort, some you can.
What I could do ten years ago I probably can't do now, but I can try.
All of the meditative traditions like Buddhist, Hindu, and Western Yoga start with "calm abiding" meditation. Most use focus on some object, such as one's own breath. Relaxing the mind is like an inner pinball game - it's an acquired skill that gets more satisfying as you develop. There are plenty of online instructions and tutorials on youtube if you can't find someone to get you started.
The natural state of our minds underneath all our stressful inputs is peaceful happiness. Learning to let go of the thoughts is a skill that takes practice.
